oil filter oil drips Empty
PostSubject: oil filter oil drips   oil filter oil drips Icon_minitime1Thu Aug 20, 2015 5:57 am

I noticed the other day after I had ridden the bike then started it up again around an hour later that there were drips of oil from the oil filter. What could be the cause/solution?

Try tightening your filter 1/4 turn with a filter wrench. Many people only do them hand tight, which is not enough. Mine had the same problem when I got it.  If you are near a Harbor Freight store, they sell a four pack of assorted size filter wrenches. One of them is the correct size for our filters. If it still leaks after that, it could also be a dirty or torn gasket on the filter.  You'll want to try these things before worrying about a more serious cause.

Are you sure the old filter gasket came off with the filter. If it got left on you have two gaskets and it will leak. They have a tendency to stick to the seat.

Also check that the four bolts that clamp around the filter that secure the sump and spacer to the block are there and tight. If they are loose or one has dropped out you can get a bit of displaced gasket that will cause leaks.

Otherwise, as Don sez, it may just not be tight enough. Did you install it or somebody else? If a shop did they have the right cap wrench? You can't tighten them sufficiently by hand.
