... at what I don't know about spark plugs.

But, I often find that I am not as smart as the things I attempt to “fix.”   Embarassed

In this instance, as I said, I speak of spark plugs.

Just finished the 12K service on my GRiSO.

Well, much of it, anyway, and all I intend to do just now, i.e., R&R engine, gear-box, & rear-drive oil; ditto air and oil filters; adjust valves (my first stab at the 8v version); and replace spark plugs.

It is the last that is giving me fits.

No, I don’t mean the cable-tie trick, etc.; I mean the right plug.

First of all, yes, I (think I) know that the OEM are the same as the the inner plugs for the Norge.  But, ones in there from the dealer service at 6K — NGK CR8-EKB multi-ground plug — seemed to work great, so I ordered the same to R&R.  Well, not quite.

I actually ordered these: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[OBTW, the “old” ones actually look just fine (to me).  See pic.  But, the interval is right for change, so I did.]

Not sure what that last “B” connotes, but the only apparent difference is the size of the terminal.

On other plugs, I have been able to just unscrew that, leaving the smaller threaded terminal.  These seems fixed, but I have not done the gorilla-torque technique yet.

And, FWIW I also have new resistor covers — NGK SB05E - 8374 — that seem to fit the larger terminal of the plugs, but, again, I haven’t a clue as to how to swap those out with the (smaller hole) versions on there now.  Do they just pull apart?

So, I ask that you smart folks out there (in as kind a manner as you can summon) tell me if I can somehow use these new plugs or if I should just tell Kathi that I bought them as splendid little objets d’art for the Moto Grappa.  Rolling Eyes

Grazie,

Bill

P.S. What a PITA to reinstall the tank; think it swelled while off.  Needed all sorts of persuasion to get it back in without busting something besides my lower orbs.  Evil or Very Mad  OTOH, I was quite pleased when the beast started after my servicing it.  Finding TDC sans S & D was a new experience, but I seem to have figured that out ... to my innocent surprise and pleasure.  Very Happy

Bill,

Those terminal caps WILL come off, just secure the plug in a spanner or plug socket and unscrew the terminal with some pliers. They torque them on there pretty snug.

If and when you need to swap the OEM boots for the NGKs, just snip off the boot with a good pair of dykes(maintaining as much lead length as possible.) Then you just screw the new boot on the freshly snipped end of the spark plug lead.

Great stuff, Steak.  Many thanks.

Have to get that GRiSO off the lift so I can get my Norge (and a buddy's riding his up from Florida) on it so can carry fewer tools to the national rally in N.H.  Wink

Seriously, really appreciate that.

Best,

Bill

I don't think the ends are removable on the EKB's. Unlike earlier variants the seem to be one piece.

My advice? Look down the throat of the plug caps, both the factory ones and the NGK's. It will be obvious from the type of terminal in the plug cap what type of attachment is needed on the end of the plug.

Depending on year the caps are different too ex-factory. Earlier bikes have a simple threaded spike in the cap that winds into the HT lead. Later models have a threaded brass insert in the end of the HT lead that threads into a female equivalent fittin in the cap. The early type guy just unwind and replace with the SBO5E type. The later ones you unwind and then have to snip off the brass fitting with sidecutters before screwing on the NGK cap.

Plugs will quite happily go way beyond the factory's replacement point. They'll go a damn sight further if you pull your finger out of yer nethers and ger the Guzzidiag suite of tools running so you can fling in Mark's map. Get with the program Hagan!Very Happy

I took mine off with a spanner and some pliers, NGK CR8EIX Iridium. Then again, they weren't the CR8-EKB...

Sorry for the lack of oversight. scratch
