I know this has been covered and I have just read the excellent write up on WildGoose but my question is; Should it be done on all model years right up until the last ones off the production line or did Guzzi get their act together towards the end.  I 'can' do it but would rather not have to as I live in London with no garage and my bike is kept at my parents, so logistics and time become a problem. The bike has only 1800 miles and I shall probably only manage a couple of thousand more in 2018 unless I can squeeze a French trip in that would add another 2500+ onto that.

Cheers
Steve

I think you answered your own question - If you are doing hardly any miles and have no time or facilities to do the work then suggest you don't bother......but since life is too short etc, you really should ride it more, and then do them at around 10K miles Very Happy

You are both correct. I 'should' ride more (only had the GRiSO delivered today) as I only managed 1300 total miles this year on the Kwacker, and Sidrat; I know I should get it done. I was just hoping someone would say "it's fine, Guzzi greased the bejesus out of it all for the last year of production and you don't need to worry! Fat chance...

The one small tub of grease that is shared by all the factory assembly lines was moved from the CARC line to the V7 line several months before the last CARC rolled off. They had to use whatever grease was left on their fingers to grease them.

I also followed the excellent post by Leafman on WG this weekend. It wasn't too bad but his tutorial on a Stelvio didn't show the PITA involved with removing the left and right foot peg structures, as well as lifting the beast... he just put his on the centerstand! I had to improvise a hoist using the 'Luigi hole' in the frame. But hey, it's done.

But I have a nagging worry...Leafman said that to remove the driveshaft (after swing arm housing has been removed), use a brass punch and rap smartly on the u-joint to pop it off the gearbox quill and its snap ring. It took more than a few raps to dislodge the shaft, but I think it was due to being seized on the gearbox quill... there was NO lube on the mating surfaces at all.

AND... there was NO SNAP RING on the gearbox quill! I looked everywhere for one, in case it popped off when the shaft got free, but never found one. I can't find any reference to one in the maintenance manual or the parts catalog. The mating u-joint didn't show a groove for one either.

So to those in the know...IS THERE a snap ring (or circlip) on the gearbox output quill? I don't want my CARC eating itself due to a missing 5 Lira part. Right now the driveshaft just slips right on, no 'click' of engagement when seated.

Thanks in advance for any insight

Regards - Don

Yes, it sits in a groove in the output shaft. When you reinstalled the shaft did you push it on firmly and then tugged it back? If it came off again the circlip isn't engaged in the yoke. Don't ride until you're sure.

Well, scheisse.

Is it your typical circlip, round stock ring maybe 28mm diameter?

I don't relish the thought of all that dis- and re-assembly, but what must be done, shall be done.

Dammit

Thanks for the reply, Pete!
