Hand-held portable ECU tools Empty
PostSubject: Hand-held portable ECU tools   Hand-held portable ECU tools Icon_minitime1Thu Dec 26, 2013 9:08 pm

I thought I might start a new thread dedicated to the the use of non-propietary hand-held tools for workshop and on-the-go use to look into or tweak your ECU.

I made a post in the Tuning with GuzziDiag thread about the Scan M5x suite of tools for Android: CLICKY.
I am finding this very useful when used in conjunction with GuzziDiag. Although it's possible to lug a small netbook around with GuzziDiag & Writer/Reader tools installed, for CO trimming, diagnostics and reflashing etc, this little app is fantastic and will do pretty much the same things (without the reflashing tools of course) and you can carry it in your pocket or monitor while riding. It's designed for the 59M and 5AM ECU, so is set up to work on Ducati's as well.

I am using a spare Samsung Galaxy Nexus I used before I had an iPhone forced upon me. I have searched for tools for iOS, but I haven't found one you can use wih the 5AM ECU. Other OBD2 compliant apps will connect to the 5AM, but can't communicate correctly. You can use any Android device of course.

The Scan M5x tools consist of the Monitor, Tests, Trimmer & DTC apps. You can use the Monitor app to, well, 'monitor' your engine. It displays RPM, Air Pressure, Air temp, Motor Temp, TPS, Ignition Advance, Volts and Injection duration. It's designed for the 59M and 5AM ECU, so is set up to work on Ducati's as well.

With the Tests app, you can reset service and run various tests:

Unfortunately in French, but they are (in order): Rev-counter, Test Fuel Pump, Vertical Coil, Horizontal Coil, Injector 1, Injector 2, 59M Fan, 5AM Fan, Reset Service.

The Trimmer can be used to reset the TPS or adjust your CO trim. Here I was testing some tweaks to my FU2 map, and I needed to adjust my CO trim. I pulled over on the side of the road and did it on the spot:

Then when I got home, I tweaked it again in the garage:

The DTC app simply will pull codes from the ECU. You can clear codes as well. Not very exciting, but handy if your have an issue while away from home!

The tools are free. I am not connected to the developer in any way. I like these tools, so I though they would be of interest.

cheers

I nominate Beetle as the official GRiSO ghetto nerd/genius.

It could be French or Greek to me for all that matters. It's a lot to digest... I'm glad you're out there shallowing out the learning curve for the rest of us.

I have ordered the bluetooth elm connector and a handlebar mount for my Sony xperia, all in £15 from ebay. The TPS screen will be handy to get an idea of the throttle position if I need to edit the fuel map again.
I'm not sure whether it can be developed into proper data logger because it would need to communicate with a wideband lambda sensor somehow I guess.

Currently it can't log anything, unfortunately. I've asked the developer to add logging capability.  He responded positively and is planning to do so plus combine the separate apps into one.

As a workaround, I use a screenshot app that has an overlay button to take as shot when required or with a timed trigger method to auto capture with a predetermined interval.

As for communicating with a wideband sensor, probably not. It could probably show the lambda voltage, but as it only talks to the ECU, it really only reports available data. Can the 5AM integrate with a wideband sensor? I suspect not.

I cannot connect the Scan m5x app to the ecu using my Sony xperia phone , not sure if it's the elm 327 wireless scanner  I'm using but after trying a friends phone with no luck it may well be.
Anyway no joy with the thing.

Tested mine with my sons Xperia, and it connected fine. Yours looks exactly the same as mine, so likely you have a dud dongle. I'd be asking for a replacement.

I tried to buy one that looked like yours and  it didn't work with the torque app on the car neither so I'm ordering a different type and see how that goes.

Can you see if the torque app works on the bike  http://torque-bhp.com/
There is a free version available with less features but enough for testing.

Thanks

Dave

Already tried Torque (and a few others), it will connect (I get a connection confirmation) but can't communicate with the ECU.

I recieved the replacement dongle and got it to work. I will probably ony ever use it for the TPS readings so it would be handy if you could fill the phones screen with just one value to make it easier to read while riding.
For TPS reset and error code reading etc. I much prefer my trusty old laptop and Guzzidiag.

One interesting thing about the Trimmer app is that unlike GuzziDiag, the engine does not have to be at 60 degrees to adjust the CO trim. The engine still needs to be running, but you can adjust the CO immediately. This is handy if you have different maps that require different CO trim settings, you don't need to warm up the engine to adjust it to a known good setting.
