Well after Pete telling me my bikes suspension was woeful, I finally took my bike to Terry hays at shock treatment on Tuesday.

He measured sag and my weight, then went for a test ride.
His test track road is like a goat track which I told him that's mainly the roads I ride on.
Four hours later he'd resprung the rear changed the valving extended the internal travel by 3mm via shims, also re valved the front and new seals etc etc .
Then all back in the bike and test rode.
Wow what a difference I just road 750 kms yesterday via putty road Oxley highway to walcha and the 550 kms back home today Aussies will understand those roads.
All up $1000.00 Aussie dollars ,my opinion great bang for buck. I'm rapt.

The downside to improving your suspension is, it becomes the yardstick for your next purchase.
In turn, they will all need to be better than the last.

At least I can say my engine is stock.

I would not need to improve my suspension if my weight was 'stock'! Rolling Eyes

I WISH we had someone local that was a suspension wiz , there are some that claim to be but in reality they are wannabes ... so it is up to your self ...currently my GRiSO 1100 has stock front suspension and a Matris on the back , it is better than it was stock but still could be much better I think .
So I will start again working with what I have and see what happens ..time to start all over and see if I can improve it before winter, which is coming rapidly here in Canada

Oh yeah, what a difference a suspension tune up makes on a GRiSO. Mine was done by our local (Northern Rivers) suspension guru Paul Rooney, who swapped a stronger Honda spring to the rear and rebuilt all the shocks etc. Along with new Pilot 4's, my 2008 GRiSO is now the best handling bike I've ever had.

When I bought the bike, the rear shock buffer was flattened, and bad roads were like torture.

Cheers
Terry

I had the honor of Paul showing me some of his own designed and crafted BMW chassis in his machine shop, and I had the distinct feeling I was seeing a rare craftsman at work and that his like won't likely be seen again. He had bikes (built on his frames) in various stages, all for overseas customers.

After Paul reconditioned my GRiSO suspension, he adjusted everything and had me go for a 10km ride then he checked and measured it all again. I feel very fortunate that Paul accepted my GRiSO to work on as he is very fussy about which jobs he accepts.

Had my GRiSO in at Terry Hay's Shock Treatment at Wallacia this morning. Forks serviced and upgraded with new springs and gold valves. The new Matris rear shock I ordered prior to Christmas was fitted and sag set. The difference in ride and cornering is staggering over the OEM suspension even though my OEM shock had been resprung and revalved in early 2016.

Worthwhile investment and no hesitation in recommending Shock Treatment for suspension work.

In the process of having a Wilbers 643 rear spring/shock fitted to my GRiSO. Will be picking the bike up next Tuesday. Can't wait to ride it and let the new unit settle in a bit. For anybody who gives a damn, happy to provide my thoughts as I get a few miles under the belt.

Please do. I've got a Wibers dealer locally who supposedly knows his stuff. I've been knocking around the idea of paying him a visit for a while. It'd be interesting to see how you get on with it.

Picked up my GRiSO today after having the Wilbers 643 rear shock fitted. Only a half hour ride home, so very early days...... OK, I'm mindful of the placebo effect, and subconsciously wanting to justify what is a fairly expensive mod, but seat of the pants feel is a very noticeable improvement. More than what I was expecting to be honest.

Gone is the rear skipping over small corrugations. Also gone is the hard hits to the seat when encountering a decent bump. It's settled, planted and smooth. Couldn't really test the higher speed damping performance, but early experience is very positive. If there's a downside, it's that it has now highlighted how harsh and jittery the front forks feel. Not going to tell the wife, but already thinking about going back to overhaul the front end!!!

I was told not to fiddle with the damping settings for a bit of time until the shock settles in. The base line damping settings (as done by the factory per my weight specs etc) are noted on the warranty card. The shop owner reckoned that these settings should be pretty damned close to where it should be at, noting the custom-made nature of the product.

Will post another report once I get a chance to take it out of the city and into the hills.

Brent.

There are too many people replacing their shocks and telling me how good the results are, can we have a moratorium on suspension mods until i can afford it too!

Brent, look forward to the update :-)

Terry Hay reworked my VTR1000 forks years ago (2003-04?) with new springs and gold valves. I remember it was like I'd bought a new bike. Sounds like his prices haven't changed much and I found him to good to deal with. Definitely on my list. Thing is, I'm just enjoying the bike so much (8500kms since I picked it up in early December) that it can wait. Needless to say, the GRiSO is miles ahead of the stock VTR, which was downright scary. I've backed off rebound and compression on the shock a little, and for my 85kgs I find it not too bad. Probably also has to do with the fact that I'm no longer the boy racer I never was. Through the rough stuff I use the leg-springs quite a bit. Still find it a total blast.

Very good Peter , I guess what we all try to achieve here is a bike that we can ride within our own abilities.
The problem is, cruising at hwy speed is a lot different to how good we think we still are, at least for this one. ( especially on GRiSO, I touch the start button, and all of a sudden, 20 years old again.)

Tee hee. Until you hit the first bend at twice the signposted speed. Then you feel all of your 52 years.

Very Happy

I'm hoping to get away with just a spring swap to cure my mushy duvet front end. Put a Mupo on last spring and it was glorious.
