ECU issues with faulty connector seal Empty
PostSubject: ECU issues with faulty connector seal   ECU issues with faulty connector seal Icon_minitime1Wed Aug 31, 2016 1:22 pm

Rpm sensor failing the self test at startup and throwing the Service message. All good after starting the engine. No other issues.

Had the same issue a couple of years ago coupled with a few other problems, progressing tappets failure being the most prominent. Last time the issue was water ingress and corrosion due to a pinched silicone seal in one of the connectors for the ECU.

I was sure that was sorted last time and startet with the sensor and worked my way back, only to arrive at the ECU connector once more. Water and corrosion again, seal was splitted under the lever hinge for the connector.

After cleaning and trying to get the connector sealed again I discovered that the neutral lamp did not work anymore. After some more checking I discovered that the pin (#23) in the ECU was missing after my cleaning. I later found it the broken off bit and it was corroded so thin that it would have to break in any case.

I made an improvised pin work, and I hope a drop of silver epoxy will keep it connected. Seal was fixed with silicone to the connector, and I used some grease on the outside to keep the water out. Function testing passed, so now it is time for durability testing...

Hi Svien
Crap, how could this happen ?
Not having a go at you but this is wow .....
What conditions has this bike been subjected to ??
Is this due to 'salting' of the roads ? We do not experience this
Just trying to get my head around this
Could you please elaborate .... I think a lot of us would be interested
Hope it all turns out ok for you
Stay safe

Manky - I would imagine salt on roads to prevent ice?

I've seen a similar story on Wild Guzzi , which prompted me to plaster a good gobb of grease on the rubber seals of the connected plugs, hopeful it will keep the water out

I try my best to stay off the salted roads even when aiming for a long season. Salted road is a problem only early and late season, but by then I prefer to wait for dry roads.

Water comes only from riding on rainy days. I think water is enough to get the corrosion going, but I am close to the sea, so there is often a bit of salt in the air as well. The particles in the pictures is sand and dust.

Inspect the seals and make sure they are not leaking if you suspect they have ever been opened by anyone. Left alone I can not see why they should  turn bad. Use grease or similar to make sure water stays out.
