If you don't like black/dark beers, tune out now...

For those that do (and I have shared a few with a few of you - those with taste):

Tooheys OLD is good as an everyday standby;
Carlton Black is also good on tap;
Coopers Stout is great;
Guinness is great;
White Rabbit Dark Ale is great;
Monteiths Black beer is awesome;

Black Rum is a good nightcap (hell of a nightcap eh Ron) after many black/dark beers;
Any rum is good any time (except for the stuff without colour - all the taste filtered out, a crying shame - I wonder what happens to the filtered bit?)

ATM, with Perth weather cooled down to a balmy 30 degrees, I am well on the road to getting "pleasant" on some Monteiths. 'Scuse me while I burp, still good second time around...

James Squire Porter on tap is also a pleasant drop. At least it was at the one pub in the Rocks that I've found it.

You have one of those Monteiths for me as well.

I'm with you Tony. Got some Monteith's in the fridge right now. I enjoy a White Rabbit now and again. Toohey's Old is the bogan beer of choice at the average pub.

Tonight I had a couple of schooners of Holgate Temptress at the Thirsty Crow. That's a nice black beer. Incidentally, I had 4 schooners of it last Sunday. And 4 schooners last Friday. I see a pattern emerging.

Guinness here in Oz is just OK. It gets better the closer you get to the source. I had several pints at the Guinness brewery a few years back. Fuck me, it was good.

Mark a blokes gotta eat - nothing better than a bottle (or two or three or four...) of sandwiches. Holgate Temptress sounds delicious. If you get to around 20-24 in a sitting, I would say a pattern has been established. Anything less than that is called getting a taste. Or, as a mate of mine used to say, "let's see if the beer is too cold to drink" never found it to be yet (though I hold out hope of never finding out).

Came across a Black Spiced Rum recently, on a visit to a prospective house to buy, called Dead Man's Drop. This is brewed in Bathurst and is (apparently) to die for - which I find a tad extreme - I would rather show up again the next night and have another go. Apparently it is available at selected markets in Bathurst and the Blue Mountains. Might have to go for a ride one Sunday. Dead Man's Drop

Even better than Guinness is Beamish. Pity they don't export it since 2009.

James Squire "Jack of Spades" Porter - purchased a case today. Might have to sample a few more tonight with this humidity. Hot and dry in Perth - medium and humid here. Mr Porter, come on down!

Went to the pub for lunch. Had a Tooheys Old. After drinking all the stout, porters and doppelbock lately, the Old was like water. Disappointment.

Found an Irish Milk Stout in a Balmain wharfies bar years ago, had a picture of a cow on the label(go figure)and the best black beer I've tasted.Never found it again or the barmaid that served it.
Monteiths Black is probably the closest thing to it.
But Hey! sitting around the fire with a 'Tooheys old' longneck will do in a pinch.

had a brilliand brown ale in Copenhagen in February called Jacobsens Brown Ale. Without doubt the best brown I have ever had. Made a pig of myself of course. It is now made by Carlsberg but is not available in Oz-mores the pity

Apparently a Japanese beer, Hitachino (I think) is supposed to be awesome. Did try Youngs Chocolate Stout some years back and enjoyed myself immensely.

Should be more of it I say

Stayed the night at Tanswells Commercial Hotel in Beechworth on the Wednesday before Broadford. They had a most superior porter from the brewery next door Bridge Road Brewers. Really stunning.
