When out for a ride and decided to take the V65 cafe instead of the GRiSO.....all was great until I dropped an exhaust valve Mad Ended up stranded in Santa Cruz mountains trying to get cell service to call for a tow....

- new heads, new barrels, new pistons in my future.

I think I had some more colorful words when it happen....made a very nasty metallic death rattle.   I shut it down pretty quickly or could have been worse. The nikasil cyclinders did get some gouges as well.  I pulled metal parts out of the exhaust when I tore it down.  Smallblocks of the era did have tendency to suddenly stretch the exhaust valves according to lore....although I may have to blame it on the shite gas here in California.  It's possible the valve stuck in the guide halfway closed. We just switched to "summer mix" here in California with a higher ethanol content.   Suspect

Our friend Karl had the same thing happen on his '74 Eldorado last summer. Lots of rebuilding...

Hate to see that happen to dear old girl. Hope the repairs aren't too distressful on you hip pocket.

Well - the good news is I was able to score a complete RH side, Cylinder, piston, heads in very good condition for $250. The hone marks are still visible on the cylinder walls. I'm going to drop the sump and make sure nothing dropped down (pretty sure it didn't) and after cleanup, bolt it back up with new gaskets. I'm wondering though if I should pop off the other head and take a look....

I recently got laid off, so trying to do this as cheaply as possible.

Replace all four valves. Early Smallblocks were notorious for doing this, especially 650's.

Check your valves every 5,000 miles and the moment they begin to close up between checks swap them out again. Also make sure the top end is kept clean and leak free.
