Oil Leak-My mistake or coincidence?? Empty
PostSubject: Oil Leak-My mistake or coincidence??   Oil Leak-My mistake or coincidence?? Icon_minitime1Wed Apr 17, 2019 4:08 am

Hello all!!
I'm not sure if the oil leak (weep) I'm seeing is due to something I did, or simply coincidental and hoping the learned ones here can shed some light on the subject. Here's the story...
Changed my oil at the end of last season with the appropriate amount of oil (perhaps a wee bit on the + side of volume as I was using one of those big ole' jugs) and after riding today (3rd ride of the season), noticed that the RH cylinder head oil cooler line has a bit of a leak around it.  My question is...would an oil level even slightly greater than the recommended amount cause this line to leak or should I be looking at pulling things apart and getting a new washer for under the banjo bolt or worse, need an new line all together? It does not appear to be a major leak and I'm thinking of maybe draining some oil just to see if that remedies the matter but was curious what you all think?

As always, thanks for any tips or advice you can share!

I think you've answered your own question.

Remove some oil so the dipstick reading is around halfway (with bike standing vertical), and then clean up the leaked oil before going for another test ride.

The timing indeed sounds suspicious, but unless you've copiously overfilled the sump, I wouldn't have thought that it would cause leaks like that? There's a crankcase/oil breather arrangement which I thought would take care of any incremental increase in pressure that may result from a tad too much oil. I'm probably wrong though.

That hose is under pressure from the pump at all times. If it is leaking there, it will leak whether you've overfilled the sump, or if it's only at half capacity.

Thanks for the feedback folks! I'll start by removing some oil first as this would be the easiest and most direct approach and go from there. If it still leaks, it looks like I'll have to get some new washers and see if that helps...I just hope the pipe itself isn't damaged, because that looks like a rather spendy part to replace ($330 USD from what I can tell). As Beetle has pointed out the quantity of oil won’t make any difference to the oil leak at the banjo bolt. But if the oil level is more than half way up the dipstick it will blow out into the air box and gum up your throttle bodies.

If the banjo bolt is tight you probably need new washers or you could try annealing the old ones to soften them which will make them more malleable and should seal your leak,(heat washers to a a cherry red color and allow to cool)

Of course yo need to examine that the pipe is not split or cracked!

Unless you removed the side panels or the tank it would be hard to spot where oil leak was starting ?; and especially to look at the banjo & line circled ? Assuming you haven't pulled tank or panels and it is a definite weep, I'd pull tank and check all the lines for where leak is starting (condom & blow-by pipes most common culprits), plus torque up the banjos while you're there.....

I'd be surprised if it's the oil line itself leaking. That is a very high quality braided line. The banjo is unlikely to be leaking, as it's in an area that's usually lets it lie undisturbed. Of course, there's the possibility that a factory drone didn't nip it up all or torque it correctly, but it would have been leaking well before now I reckon. At this point, if it's definitely leaking, I would simply try nipping it up. Removing the "wing" gives you easy access. A 19mm spanner (wrench) is required.

You all are the best!
I apologize for not being more specific in my original post. I did take off the winglet thing the other day after my ride home from work because I noticed a drip of oil on the top of the oil cooler casing which is what prompted me to investigate. Once said winglet was removed, I noticed that the hose/banjo bolt connection area was oily so as you all have suggested, it's likely the washer and/or the torque on the bolt itself. We've got rain here for the next few days so I likely won't get to really dig in until Saturday. I'm hoping I can just nip up the bolt but if that doesn't do it, I'll at least get some practice in removing the tank and putting in new washers which is something I haven't done yet but recall a number of good tips on the tank removal somewhere located in this fantastic forum community :-)
Thanks again everyone!

I had that pipe (14) replaced as it developed a couple of pin holes near the bend, not at the banjos. Difficult to pick where it was coming from under the braiding. The factory replacement cost a gazillion pesos so if you have to replace maybe get someone to make up a new one. Probably cheaper.

Not a big leak but a light spray/mist over everything when pushing it. Replaced because a total fail might be catastrophic. An early (09) model, I think the newer 8V's don't have the T piece but go to one banjo then the other. Maybe...

Probably just poor quality pipe.

Don't fret. I'll address this after I've has supper and a sleep but if it is still from the pipe it's most likely the washers.
