Just picked up a Shiraz Dolcetto from Aldi for $4.99. Now have to chill it & wait for a warm day to test it out. it should be a slightly sweet red that's good for summer social sipping. Good for a change.

You guys are making me homesick, I lived for 25 years close to the Barossa Valley, with great cellar doors within easy reach.  I now live in North Wales where they wouldn't know a Shiraz from a Ribena.  what is it with this Prosecco shit all the girls drink here its bilge water !!

I pity you, mate. I was forced to drink Prosecco recently. I think its the same as the stuff that old folk put in the jar with their false teeth in overnight.

Isn't Prosecco the 21st Century version of "Summer Wine" or even worse, "Cold Duck"?????

They're pricier in Oz! Really! The push to export plus high taxes makes it so. While it would be easy to winge and sook about it the fact remains we are some of the luckiest people on earth, something far too many people seem to forget! Also it makes bargain hunting a bit more of a challenge!

Over here Dan Murphy's, (Just about the biggest grog purveyor.) has Pepperjack at about $22 and it's a damn fine young red that will get a lot better in two or three years. That's an absolute bargain compared to the sort of swill that is sold regularly in the $18-20 range. That being said if you aren't frightened of taking a risk you can pick up some $10-12 bottles that are drinkable and for everyday 'Glass with supper' wine some of the cleanskins are quite palatable.

Just showed Jude the Cold Duck label and she squeaked in horror! When she was a lass Cold Duck had a reputation with the lads as being a 'Good leg-opener!'. If you got taken out on a date and the boy turned up with a bottle of Cold Duck you could gaurantee that he'd have WHS! Laughing

I paid $23 Can for the Pepperjack in Smithers BC at a Govt store. Wish we had the drive thru bottle shops like Oz.

Amalaya Malbec, 2014. Delicious smoothy from Argentina.

Went down very well with a nice medium rare beef fillet. Scrumptious!

Funnily enough we had a bottle of that in London a couple of nights ago. It didn't really excite me. Wasn't awful but just not my favourite type of vino.

Admittedly I'd just drunk a litre of Asahi Super Dry, and was chowing down on a perfectly cooked Fillet of Beef (garlic mash and asparagus Milanese on the side), so my view may have been skewed. I still say it was good!

cheers

Nice little Italian job found at Trader Joe's (a US wing of the Albrecht/Aldi Wehrmacht). A varietal you don't see much around here. Uniquely perfumey, yet very dry:

Nice LBC,

A good one to chase down, if you can find it, is Montepulchiano D'Abbruzzo. This is a (very) easy drinking red from the Abbruzzo region on the Adriatic in Italy - many a good Sunday has turned into great with this one - not very expensive either, generally

Thanks for the recommend Tony. I have seen a few of those in the stores, but I haven't been very adventurous with the Italian wines since having a few that weren't very good. This Nero d'Avola has me taking another look at the Italians. I will try the Monte d'Abruzzo.

Like all wines there are goodies and baddies. Sometimes it's a lottery.

This one is fantastic. 2012 half Malbec, half Cab from Chile. Only $8 per bottle when you buy a case at Cost Plus World Market. I was lucky enough to snatch the last case at the store near me:

Wyno, you should know!

Sacrilege is the violation or injurious treatment of a sacred object, person or drink. It can come in the form of irreverence to sacred persons, places, and wines. When the sacrilegious offence is verbal, it is called blasphemy, and when physical, it is often called desecration.

Port has feelings too.

Ireland is not famous for its wine.

Everything we've had here has been distinctly mediocre and overpriced. Probably just as well as my gout has been giving me shit and we've both come down with the flu! A few 'Clean' days will probably work wonders for my health but we're looking forward to getting to France!

On the other hand the Irish do do spectacular hats
