PostSubject: 2005 carbed Triumph Thruxton vs GRiSO 1100.   Sat Jul 23, 2016 6:39 am

I love my Triumph Thruxton and have it running pretty good. Have opened up the intake and exhaust and rejetted, it's easy to work on and is a blast to wring out. I plan on keeping it but.......but.....cruising 85mph is a very busy adventure (totally naked bike) my son owns a new 1200 Ducati and likes to cruise faster than my Thruxton likes to cruise and I would like to comfortably keep up to him in those speeds. I can't afford a G12 but I could afford to ad a G11. Unfortunately I have never ridden a G11 (or G12) and so this keyboard is all I have right now. Will the G11 easily cruise at 80-90mph? Does the engine feel like it's spinning up to hard at those speeds? The GRiSO 1100 would be ideal.....2 cylinders, it's priced right with spades in looks and appears to be easy to work on but will it fit my need? Is there enough of a difference between the G11 75+- rear wheel hp and 60+- Thruxton hp?

I'll sit all day at that speed with plenty more to come.

That's great to hear. I know that the 1100 has Brembo brakes and decent fully adjustable suspenders to. Now I just need to get a test ride on one.

One thing to consider is that because of the tappet problems of the 1200 there are a lot of people, especially Luddites, who shy away from them and their reputation means that they don't command the price they should. Perversely the 1100's can command higher prices than the 1200's!

If you can find a genuine low mileage flat tappet 8V and immediately get it inspected and rollerised it may well end up costing you less than a good low mileage 1100!

Certainly over here what people are advertising early G12's for and what they are selling for are worlds apart! You rarely see them advertised for less than $15,000 but similarly I haven't heard of a Flattie going for over ten in a private sale, even after rollerisation.

something like this one?     [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I was thinking about this one. I did not know the 1100 was still made in 2008 though [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The 2009 is a safe bet but just because it's claimed to have been inspected and found to be OK doesn't mean that it is still OK or that it won't go tits later.

All the flatties are going to fail. That's the long and ahort of it. The fact that this is such a low mileage bike is both a good and a bad thing. At this mileage the damage may not be evident, especially to someone unfamiliar with the problem. That's good because it means that the tappets haven't had time to damage other parts of the motor but it's bad because no evidence means the factory won't offer a kit gratis.

Thing is inspecting them isn't a big job as you can see from the video Mark posted up of me pulling a cambox. As long as your dealer is willing to do that at every service then as soon as damage is visible then a claim can be whacked in. I'd be very surprised if that bike would get up to 10,000 miles without damage being obvious on inspection.

As I've said before when asked whether I'd buy another flattie? Yes! In a heartbeat! As long as it was low mileage and the price was right. The biggest factor in the equation is whether you trust your dealer to actually pull the cambox for a look rather than just measuring the valve lash and saying "She's Good!" And whether they realise that NO visible deterioration of the tappet coating is acceptable.

They both look like good buys. I'd bet that the tappets on the 8V do show a few specs of DLC missing.

You might want to compare the 1100 to the new Triumph Thruxton 1200

My 1100 is a 2008. Cruising at 80-90 is no problem at all.

Another 1100 owner reporting in. Would recommend adding a decent windscreen (not the small factory one) if you want to be able to do 80-90+ comfortably for any lengthy period of time. Just my 2 cents.

I have the small one. If you get low above 85 it helps.

What do you recommend? Was wondering if the Dart ones are decent without ruining the look.

The GRiSO has some long, ass legs. High speed cruising is like butter. Good luck in your quest.

Thanks all. I'm going to test ride the 1100 I posted about so we'll see how that works out. I will report back with my opinion. My Thruxton has a fly screen but I rarely use it as I feel it defeats the naked bike theme.

Fair point. And a Guzzi is a nicer thing.

So I finally was able to test ride the GRiSO 1100.

It fit me like a glove and was love at first ride! Riding position was perfect, wide handlebars felt awesome, feet and leg position couldn't be better and the seat positioned me firmly in the cockpit. The naked nature of this bike is exactly what I am looking for everything was better than expected (almost perfect)........except the motors top end ability. Also the cycle i rode had just a little to much wear on it which I assume I will find in any 7-9 year old bike.

Now on to the GRiSO 1200. I am afraid I may have to dig a little deeper into the wallet then I wanted but I am fairly sure I have found what I have been looking for hopefully the 1200 ergo's are mostly the same as the 1100.

They are. Slightly narrower bars and that's about it.

Bear in mind the cautions about flat Tappet models. I rollerised a 3,500km model yesterday, (Well, Michael did!) and it was well on the way!

I'll post up a pic shortly. Can't post pics from my pad of I's so I need to hop on the desktop. Gotta put a couple of pics up for that bloke with the 2009 Stelvio on the AF1 site too.
