Went to Aldi this morning and the missus bought me a pair of the leather pants for my birthday. They come with CE knee and hip armour and only cost $140 AUD. I've been out for a ride on the GRiSO and they fit well. Kinky Heather won't let me take them off now. I hope she didn't buy any whips at Aldi.

Mal, I haven't seen Aldi's gear, in fact I haven't been inside an Aldi store, but.....what's the quality like????

I saw a guy after a low speed off on bitumen, about 40-50kmh, and when I saw him I thought he was just wearing a T-shirt and became a bit of a skin crayon.
However he was wearing a Chinese made jacket, forget the brand, but he had some quite bad abrasions to his arms. The stitching on the jacket gave way and opened up some big holes.

Soon after this I met a guy who had a high speed off in the south west.....about 120 kmh. Some bitumen time, then bouncing off some of the local flora. His BMW jacket held up well, no abrasions, but obviously a couple of fractures.

It might be called motorcycle gear, it might be cheap, but will it do the job??????

Glen, my missus bought me a pair of the leather bike pants as an early birthday present. I wore them when we went out for a ride today. The look to be well made, they're comfortable, they have CE approved hip and knee armour, and they're only $140. I've never had a pair of leather pants before so I can't tell you how the quality compares to anything else, but I think they're OK.

Had a 1098 track day junkie posing in his asian made psychedelic suit, bragging how light and comfy and cheap they were. When he crashed the stitching opened up from arsehole to breakfast.

Years ago I read an article on what was important in leather gear and from memory the three most vital things were the thickness of the hide, the number of stitches per inch and the manner in which the seams were folded and stitched. Since that time, (This was decades ago!) armour and reinforcement has improved exponentially but I'd think the actual rules governing the quality and manufacture of the hide would be fairly similar.

Incidentally, if anybody is interested I have a full 2 piece Dainesse race suit I bought five or six years ago that I rarely wear. It's now too small for me. Only worn half a dozen times. Cheap to anyone interested, it's absolutely 'As New'. I have a pair of Alpine Star pants that are really comfortable and prefer fabric clothing for my top half so I just never use the suit.

I'm currently half a world away from it Wayne. I'm 5'10" and have a long back and short legs. It's a tad short in the back for me but not uncomfortably so. As you know I'm a fat bastard and its tight on me but I drink my own body weight in beer every day and hate excercise!

Having said that I have vowed to take a brisk walk with Jude every day while we're away! Walked two miles yesterday and my feet are killing me Very Happy.

Luckily walking in England in August really is lovely!

The quality of the gear is generally good - the armour is CE certified. the leather & some of the denim is CE certified. Spoke with a guy whose Aldi gloves split the stitching on his 3rd off, so he was getting another pair. An ad hoc test of various kevlar jeans ion the m/c press gave a positive results. (Keep in mind kevlar is plastic & will likely burn the skin in an off). The helmets are CE & AUS certified, come with a spare visor & spare lining, now with a sun shade & are cheap - if they fit your head comfortably, get one as a spare, at least.

My five year old Aldi jacket lost one of the side pocket zip pulls recently, although the zip on the inside pocket went some time back. Satisfied, but the newer ones seem better (more robustly) made. The bike covers last about a year in the Aussie sun before they start the disintegration process. I couldn't fit the tall boots, but do fit the ankle boots (CE certified) - they are comfortable. The socks are brilliant, the merino mid layer is good. I've had mixed results from the previous versions of their rain gear - some work well for me, but not for my cousin. Sometimes the main zip fails, but not always. The merino base layers (not in the current sale) are excellent - don't leave home without them. I've had the first version of their fabric jackets - they were good, but don't survive contact with hot headers, the big lower pockets on the touring version weren't as waterproof as the rest of the jacket. The newer ones seem better made.

Note that some time after the main sale, a lot of the stuff turns up at random stores, often at reduced prices.

At their prices, it can't hurt much to try out some of their stuff.

Pete,

If you are in the area, I recommend you get in touch with Andy, the Chain Man. A retired engineer with a lifetime working in chains, now retired & specialising in supplying chain for classic bikes (including those guzzis with timing chains). An interesting bloke with a useful specialty, I think you two (or four) would get along. He lives in Bewdley near Kidderminster, and enjoys showing people around his village with it's 26 pubs. Rides a Blackbird, fast.

Contact details - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] He's also often at the classic bike meets.

Aldi's CE rated gear is one of the few brands available in Australia that is really certified. Much of it (other brands) is "rated" but not against any known standards, or simply claiming it is rated.

I had some jeans with Kevlar in them (well known brand) and I suspect the Kevlar might have actually worked, but the denim would rip if you glanced at it, don't imagine there would be much left to save my sorry arse if I came off in them. Long gone now...

I have an Aldi leather jacket - no complaints. Oh and I scored some more socks on Saturday - love them.
