PostSubject: Yamaha 1300XJR - GRiSO Beater?   Tue Nov 01, 2016 10:59 am

Has anyone any thoughts on whether the Yamaha 1300XJR rides, sounds, corners, and makes you smile better than the soon to disappear GRiSO?

GRiSO might be my first love but she isn't going to be around forever - perhaps now is the time to cheat on her?

Thoughts?

They don't have the character the GRiSO has, but it is a perfect two up bike. I have ridden them many times and will be looking for a used one in the spring as the
GRiSO is not two up friendly. You can get them pretty cheap too with decent mileage.

Actually, you did not even ask about two up for the FJR. It rides great, corners okay and might make you smile in other ways, but won't have as much fun or sound factor. The power is
very good with decent torque. Very comfortable.

I'd rather have a Norge.

Why get rid of a GRiSO because they are no longer in production?
Spare parts will not become unobtainium overnight.

Any OEM parts that are "No longer available", will be reproduced by some enterprising person like Okaruner from Turkey with the Givi tank rings.

Because you now own an instant classic, it's value will increase overtime.

XJR is just a faster barge with no character.

Many are still running the original Le Mans in many countries. Parts will not dry up for a long long time.

You pay a lot more for old Guzzi's now than what they cost new.
1983 MKIII Le Mans AUD$5500
2002 g.c. second hand $7500
Now a reasonable MKIII will cost you 10k+ over here. Excellent examples are 15K+
33 years old and still most parts available.

GRiSO. Instant classic.
Buy one in a crate as part of your retirement investment plan. Cannot lose.

Performance by spec sheets shows the GRiSO as more powerful, same torque, lighter by a few pounds and from experience runs rings around the XJR for handling. It is different.

XJR's an I4 with shimmed valves. Home servicing a pain in the arse and never makes me smile. 16 to check. Ever checked clearance, removed some shims, measured shims, calculated new shim size, locate and order new shims, put them back in and drop a screw down the guts of the motor before you put the cover back on? I have. Hate I4's. too many moving bits.

Thanks everyone for elaborating etc. The GRiSO is a classic - I'm taking her for a spin and forget those stupid thoughts! Investment plan - huh - buy a second GRiSO - now that's a thought? What would it be worth in 20 years? $30k?

It's not stupid thoughts if you got the hots for the XJR...
If the GRiSO isn't doing it for you then don't hold on to it.
You'd only be making a mistake if still like the bike and let it go.

I think its a case of "much wants more" or the as a result of bs marketing "the grass is always greener."

So decision made - I feel you have collectively saved me from a foolish and expensive mistake - thanks everyone - GRiSO forever!

I was flirting with the idea of trading my 1100 for a new 2016 but I just couldn't do it. That bike has been really reliable with 22.000 miles so far.
My 2013 is tied up in an Insurance dispute due to a wreck last December...I'll trade that one instead or keep it for parts if declared unrebuildable and create my own light weight 8V Guzzi.
After that, I'll still get that Diablo Rosso.

I inspected an 850 LeMans last year in WA with average engine condition but good body restoration that sold on ebay for $24,000.

I'm pretty certain I'd get $25,000 for my 750S and plus $20,000 for my SFC1000. Both excellent condition.

But... Bikes like cars suck for investment. Not only net present value, but are we going to be able to ride these things in 40 years? No one is going to pay big dollars for the flood of museum pieces when they ban them.

The big investment, of course, is in the ride.

It's more likely to make you frown as a GRiSO flies by cheers

I don't own/ride a GRiSO because it's a world beater...

If you were really looking to replace a GRiSO with a Yamaha; wouldn't you naturally go for a second hand MT-01 ? At least it is a unique and quirky looking big V twin.

Funny, I had an FJR 1300 (an '06), enjoyed it for a long tour, sold it, and came across a second hand '09 GRiSO. My second Moto Guzzi ('96 Le Mans IV) and don't miss anything about the Yamaha. Good bike but just too "sterile". The GRiSO and I have bonded in ways the FJR and I never did. Very different bikes to be sure but the GRiSO has personality.
