PostSubject: To Screen or not to scene, that is the question   To Screen or not to scene, that is the question Icon_minitime1Fri Jan 24, 2014 3:42 am

OK,. so far I do not have a problem at slab speeds with the wind. However, I assume if I am traveling more than an hour at speed, regardless of road, there will eventually be fatigue problems.

Here is my dilemma. To put a "touring" screen on is like putting a sissy bar on. Not a good look at all.

I do like the OEM small screen, but it has been discontinued due to DOT regs. Givi does does not make the A770 screen any more.

I cannot contact Daes Motec for a screen.

What is one to do?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Is this what you call the 'small' screen, or are you talking the 'fly' screen?

I don't think the fly screen does much of anything other than screening flies.  I've actually come to like the way the standard guzzi screen looks on the GRiSO.  That's the one Roper, Beetle and Fresh Egg have on their GRiSOs.  It's just a little spendy.

The Givi A770 has been another popular option, but you can't find them any more.  I have one, but I'm not 100% satisfied with it.  It works well to keep the wind off your torso but it doesn't integrate perfectly in stock trim.  Some custom bracketry would go a long way towards a better fitment.

I've been scouring the Italian's GRiSO board for some time to find some better options that work well and still look good.  At the present there are two options I've been favoring.

First is a universal screen by F.Fabbri, model number 3000 linked here.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Here's a US vendor, but you can search for Fabbri windscreens for others (model 3000 for example)

There's also a member of the Italian GRiSO board who is fabricating a good looking option and I suspect he'd be happy to make one for us here stateside.  From what I can tell, he can make a generic version or custom paint to the buyers specs.  Here's some info:

Here is his ad, in Italian, 80 Euros

Translated to English

And his web page.

As an aside.  I rode my current GRiSO w/o a fairing for over a year and only had a couple of occasions where I really wanted a windscreen and both involved 20+ MPH headwinds.  The windblast without headwinds really isn't that bad at highway speeds.  A slight forward lean compensates a great deal (at least for a 200+ lb man...)  I only put the A770 from my previous GRiSO on the Diavolo Nero a few weeks ago, but as I said, I'm not very happy with the fit using the mounts to the headlight ears.

I'd like to fabricate some better mounts that use the bosses underneath the upper triple tree as in the fly screen mounts.  Just need to beef the concept up a bit to compensate for the leverage of the taller screen.

Steak, I have the 770 and I use thick washers (1/8") that are the size of a quarter and this thing doesn't move/tilt, even at 140mph tested speeds. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
I rode the new bike back from GA (about 550 miles) last Sunday without any kind of fairing and after about 50 miles or so, I didn't really miss it even at 80/90mph.

Guys, if I had to get a different one, I'd go with the V11 Corsa one... Still available for about $300 or so.

Grisonut, thank you as well.

So far it has not been a problem without the screen. I might just keep it that way.

As a card-carrying contrarian, let me put in a plug for the factory flyscreen.

I rode for a few months without it, and while I wasn't uncomfortable at highway speeds, I really noticed a difference when I put it on. As small as it is, it took a noticeable amount of air pressure off my chest which made the lean more natural and allowed me to loosen my grip and relax a bit more. It also eliminated the slight helmet buffeting I used to get. Even helped a little in the rain by aiming the stream higher.

Obviously when weather protection is the goal, bigger is better, but I like the flyscreen a lot better than the naked GRiSO. I also like the looks. As always, YMMV.

W, Nice photo. The fly screen/small wind screen has been discontinued according to my sources. There was a problem with DOT regs.

The fly screen looks great on the bike.

I will just have to check e-bay.

I didn't like any of the options offered for the GRiSO so I made my own fly screen from a Suzuki windshield I had laying around. I am very happy at how it looks and works. At freeway speeds it blocks the wind up to about neck level for much less fatigue and arm strain.

It was advertised as DOT compliant when I bought it a year ago. The factory flyscreen is still available if you look around.

Another option is the Dart flyscreen, shown below. Sold for V7s and Triumphs, it will fit a GRiSO by bending the mounts slightly or fudging an adapter.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Smaller and less expensive, the Dart does a good job of protecting the dash electronics from water and takes some of the wind off. Had one on my V7 Cafe and it was well-made. Here's a link:

Fastrixx is quite a place. I don't think English is their first language. Smile

The web site does not work, and when I called to see if the part was in stock, I had to repeat myself with the part number (which is on their web site) 5 times.

I did look at the MAR Speed screen. It looks interesting.

I don't have any problem with the A770 moving around as I extend the mounting flange into the gap between the turn signal spacer and the signal mount.  That stiffens up the windscreen nicely.  The problem I have is with the general fitment of the screen around the headlight bucket and the relative lack of adjustability in that regard.  I think some custom mounts that utilized the fly-screen bosses under the triple tree could affect a great improvement.

As another alternative, Pete (Street) has fabricated some very clever supports that connect the upper portion of the A770 to the handlebar risers.  There is absolutely no flex whatsoever in his set up.

Which V11 Corsa screen are you talking about?  The flyscreens on the spiney series?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

National Cycle also has the F15 and F16 universal screens that might be another option.

I have the larger of the two factory screens and although pricey it is very well made, fits and works well, at least for me. I also have a huge aftermarket screen that I can fit in winter if I wish although I haven't for the last couple of years. Sure, its as ugly as a hat full of farty arseholes but it does keep me warm and dry!

Here's a pic of Daniel Kalal heading out on tour with the 'Screenus Hideosous' on.

Geez Pete, with that screen and that fugly 'special seat', you could possibly have the ugliest GRiSO on the planet. Oh, add hand guards and that would guarantee it.

Look, I like the colour scheme but I know most people prefer something a little bit more? Errr? 'Understated'? Very Happy

As for the seat? I actually think the stocker is more comfortable overall BUT! If I bring the Cali14 over here from the US I'll be able to get our local seat guy to take the hideous seat and adapt it to the Cali's seat base and for that it would be a HUGE improvement! As for the hideous screen? That is purely a matter of practicality, it works extremely well, not only as weather protection but also as an anti-theft device! Razz
