PostSubject: Steering head bearings regrease   Steering head bearings regrease Icon_minitime1Mon May 19, 2014 9:16 am

I have recently bought a 2010 1200 8v, 3500miles, 1000 of these were mine in the week after i bought it, i have been reading the comments, it seems that the steering & swing arm bearings are a must do.
Has anyone done the steering head bearing regrease, if so can you post a description with tips PLEASE.
Loving the GRiSO, ive had BMs up to now, still got a K1200GT 06, great bike, efficient but no character, GRiSO is great looking & interesting/different!!.

Steering head is very straightforward.

Wheel off, forks out, headlight and bars off, 14mm Key to undo top nut, yoke off, bend down tabs on lockwasher for retainer peg nuts, undo nuts with 'C' spanner, drop out bottom yoke and spindle.

If the bearings are rusty replace them with tapered rollers, I have the number somewhere. If you need to do this I'd order the dust seals before you remove the bearing as you are almost bound to damage them getting the bottom race off.

Thanks Pete.
Did this today, fairly easy, bearings were nicely greased up, but put some more on anyway.

Mine were not greased lavishly but had enough on them not to rust up. Some of my customers haven't been so lucky. Greasing them lavishly and adjusting them carefully helped speed up the steering considerably.

When i was preloading the steering bearings, i went to 40nm, but it felt to much, i then backed off & did by feel, when i felt it was correct i grabbed the bottoms of the fork stems & checked for play, none detected & nice smooth action, it feels smoother than it did, so i suspect there was too much preload before.
I suppose its the swing arm greasing next!!!.
I love this bike, after years of Uber slick BMs, its great to have a bit of character, ive actually had people walk into my garage to get a look & ask what it is.

I jacked up the front of mine and pulled and pushed the forks - no play. Also, the forks swing from lock to lock with no feeling of binding or notchiness, just a nice constant freedom with no detectable resistance. They felt 'right', so I'm guessing they are correctly pre-loaded and greased.

Not sure where I saw this but read somewhere that the 2 piece angular contact ball bearings as used in our GRiSO needs to be preloaded but I'm not sure if the 40Nm suggested is correct.
When I last did mine I used around 30Nm and there wasn't any resistance to turning.
Maybe someone with an engineering background can chime in and clear this up, bearing in mind (excuse the pun) this is a motorcycle not a pushbike and these bearings can be placed under massive loads when ridden hard.

wasn't 15 Nm as value in the book?

When they are gone, there are fitting conical bearings, Koyo 32907JR-3 or Koyo 32907JR-2

Fitted in some jap bikes too

The copy of the manual I have shows 40Nm but as we know it is not always a good idea to trust torque figures in a Guzzi manual. Obviously this would be different if you fitted non original tapered roller bearings but this is not always necessary if the original ball bearings are sound.
