G11 oil confusion Empty
PostSubject: G11 oil confusion   G11 oil confusion Icon_minitime1Mon Jun 30, 2014 9:58 am

Hi everyone, I would appreciate a little bit of help from experienced GRiSO riders. Problem is as follows:

I have a early 2006 GRiSO 1100 and have decided to change oil myself. The trouble is, there is no consensus anywhere online on what oil should go inside. The workshop manual says Agip Racing 5W40, but then I have encountered posts referring to a MG service bulletin in which the recommendation was changed to 10W60. Then I have noted on Eni (Agip) website that they recommend Eni iRide(?) 5W-40 for Grisos manufactured in 2005-2006 and 10W-60 in those manufactured in 2006-2009.  Neutral

The latter part confuses me the most - was there a change in the engine in 2006 that required a different grade oil?

Anyway, if someone has a reasonable explanation or simply a straightforward recommendation please share.

Thanks!

Use a high quality full synthetic. This is the main consideration as the pushrod engines do run hotter in the W5AM bikes than earlier models when running closed loop. FWIW I use a 10/70 in all of 'em.

Thanks Pete, but what does "high quality" refer to? It's not like there is a label stating medium or low quality oils  scratch

You want to go for preferably a PAO full ester synthetic, most of the 'Name' brand 10/60's meet this criteria. Generally speaking the Guzzi pushrod motor used in the 1100's is very easy on its oil, the main exception being the heat. The other thing to be aware of is that flat tappet engines like quite high levels of ZDDP so try and find an oil with a goodly amount in. Many modern oils contain very little as the Zinc and Phosphorous are murder on catalytic converters and while I remain unconvinced that ZDDP in and of itself is vital, (There are other anti scuff additives that can be used.) having higher levels won't do any harm and does offer a degree of protection.

Ok, taking all my research into account, I think I will go with Mobil 1 Extended Life 10W60 which apparently has 1300ppm ZDDP.

Now only to find a proper (and available to me) gearbox/CARC oil  bounce

I was unable to find a proper discussion on this topic, but have found on several occasions that people use 85W-170 gear oil for both?

Any suggestions in this area?

Any decent synthetic gear oil will be fine. Guzzi specify something ever so slightly different for the gearbox and bevelbox, I use a 75/90 in both.

I've never seen a 75/170? 75/140 yes, but not a 75/170. I wouldn't want to go to something with that high a hot viscosity, it might have trouble getting into the needles. Really though by going to a higher viscosity than suggested all you are really likely to be doing is robbing yourself of power through frictional losses.

Sorry, it was a typo. I meant 140, not 170.

Thanks for your help! I will look for synthetic gear oil which is available and near the specified grade.

I use 75W90 synthetic gear oil in both boxes also. I've been using MOTUL GEAR300, but there are plenty of brands out there in that weight or in 80W90.

I run 80/90 in both boxes and it's not gonna hurt anything.

Adding ZDDP in the engine oil is also a good idea for the 8V mill with flat tappets...
My 09's tappets shit the bed at 36K miles, right before I wrecked.
It should not have happened and it's all History now but I can't help to think that if I added ZDDP from new it would have prevent this.

It wouldn't of done any harm but I still strongly believe that the failures are not oil related per-se.

Redline makes a nice ZDDP Additive, or in a pinch, there is always Red STP oil additive.

just a quick mention on zddp, it is not being removed from oil to be cheap, it destroys cats and o2 sensors in very small amounts.

goes for any zinc compound in oil.

this prob only matters if ya have to pass emmisions
