Subject: Convert GRiSO to Adventure Bike ?? Wed May 12, 2021 4:36 pm
Is it possible to turn a GRiSO into an adventure bike ? Idaho has more dirt roads than paved and I want to travel these dirt roads to get into the mountains more often.
What would I need to change besides the tires ?

If it were me, I'd keep the GRiSO for all the wonderful roads Idaho has to offer and pick up another ADV bike for what you describe. The ADV market is wide and deep with many, many choices.

mate of mine just got himself a SWM RS500R as a dirt road/ mountain climber....
he is having a ball. its was as cheap as... its the old Husky rebuilt by SWM, so a great platform with good history
and, of course, it is Italian
Those are pretty cool. And it's neat they've been resurrected under a different name.
I do know that in comparison to other modern 500 thumpers, they are quite a bit heavier, but I suppose that's the trade-off with their affordable price. It could be a cool option.

FFS, the GRiSO AND the Stelvio are both big, heavy pigs! If you want a dirt trail bike, get a dirt trail bike. 500-600 lb bikes are not your friends out in the single track wilderness.
Fire roads, sure. Beyond that, you're really going to want something a LOT more nimble.
WTF, why do people want to "adapt" a GRiSO into something it was never meant to be?
"Hey guys, look down in that ditch. Isn't that GRiSO a good looking bike?" Oh and, "Ow, my leg. I think it's broken..."

I was trying to be nice Steve but I completely agree.
A Stelvio is a very nice back roads bike that will handle well graded dirt just fine but it's not and never will be a bush-basher. The GRiSO though is utterly, utterly unsuited to any sort of dirt beyond short stints of perfectly graded, dry, clay surface. It's wheelbase is immense, it's suspension travel is small and it weighs as much as a small house.

When I was a kid my brother and I had a Suzuki RM 125. We hammered on it mercilessly for years and couldn’t kill it. You can’t beat the Japanese for cheap durable dirt bikes.

On my wish list is a Suzuki DR 650 as a mate to the GRiSO. A "go anywhere do anything" 2nd bike. Some extraordinary You tube videos of balls out riders on them in the bush.

Been doing a little research. 250 to 300 cc bikes. Actually considering an XT250 but alas none available right now.

DR650, one of the bikes I regret trading off for another race bike. Replaced the carb with a FCR39 and running a Super Trap exhaust really woke it up. (hmm a "woke" motorcycle?) I put a set of road tires on it because you know, Indiana, not a lot of fire roads here. Really a hard to beat all around do anything kind of ride. NOT light enough for single track trails through the woods but you could do it if you had to.
GRiSO is a GRiSO so why change it up?

I rode mine to the Arctic circle up and back 400 km of rough gravel I wrapped a rubber mat around the sump to deflect any rocks spat up by the front wheel. Better protection for the delicate oil cooler, Lexan cover for the headlight. Husky 701LR would make a good companion to the GRiSO imho and go well in the PNW. The Yamaha T7 seams to be the hit for the year

I never took a GRiSO to Hyder, but I did take an 1100 California SS Aluminium up there. Such a fantastic trip from Seattle.
Took the longer route home via the Yellowhead Parkway first to Jasper, then down to Banff/Calgary before heading southwest again.
