2 valve engines - camshaft chain Empty
PostSubject: 2 valve engines - camshaft chain   2 valve engines - camshaft chain Icon_minitime1Tue Jun 07, 2022 11:12 am

Hi everyone,

I searched the forum about this topic, but I just found posts about the 4 valve engines...
I checked the Service Manual I have but I couldn't find usefull information either...
Basically my questions are:
- Does the camshaft chain needs to be tensioned? When?
- When will it need to be replaced?
My engine has now 42.000 km. I hear the usual mechanical orchestra, but nothing very alarming...

Thanks and best regards,
Matias

Matias, think of your cam chain around 100,000 km - should be good until then, I hope

Yeah, not really necessary to do it any time soon but I'd say 100,000 is a good time to do it. Why? Well for one it's very easy. For two the cam chain tensioner isn't the best and you can end up with timing flutter if it gets too sloppy, thirdly if you leave it W-A-Y too long it will start sawing it's way out of the timing chest!

I believe, but I'm not certain, that you can now get a Valtech type 'Blade' tensioner for the later engines which would be a huge improvement over the crappy 'Flappy Foot' tensioner used by the factory.
