Anyone have this on the GRiSO? If so, how do you like it?

I've got one but took it off after Pete suggested it might rip my brake caliper off if I went down. A new CARC is bulk $$. Of course, I went down and now have a scratched CARC, but a functional brake.

For race bikes crank case and clutch covers must have a steel or carbon cover to save spilling oil on track in the event of a crash. The carbon covers can be quite thick but moulded to exact shape of the alloy, it looks good.

Too easy for some body to make one for the CARC ........................................

As long as you don't bring er down on an aircraft carrier grabbing the catch rope …
Are there any bodies of proof in the case of broken calipers due to carc guards?

I have the one from AF1 its ok but I like the GuzziTech one better [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I am going to add a piece of nylon to mine to brace it against the CARC.

My philosophy on this part is that for a tip over (more likely) it will be fine, for a major crash
I have my insurance. I have not seen evidence of damage from these guards yet. I have dropped bike before and I will likely drop this one sometime...

These versions from Stucchi Luigi seem to me to be the best "sacrificial" option.

I have one of the Guzzitech versions, and have dropped the bike twice on it.   No damage to the brake mounts, and no damage to the CARC, but of course the guard itself is now scratched.  I am an advocate, although I also think Pete's concerns are valid. The GT version features that rubber bumpstop so there's less chance of the guard "levering" the brake mounting bolts when the bike falls on it.

Diedel, I have no proof or evidence, I simply trust Pete's concerns re the guard. I have no wish to find out either.

My concerns are just that, concerns. They may be unfounded but the fact remains that the guards mount on the brake mounts and in the event of a major Biff there is the chance of them buggering the mounts. That worries me. Also it's adding yet more unsprung weight to the rear wheel. Sod that, it's heavy enough as it is!

If the Stucchi cover was black of C/F it would at least look unobtrusive. But alloy or stainless are both heavy and ugly by comparison, both could dent or puncture quite easily with resultant damage underneath to the CARC housing.

A similar wrap around in 5mm thick carbon but smaller and bonded to the CARC instead of unsightly and heavy brackets and bolts, would be the best result IMMHO.

I also concur with Pete's comment regarding unsprung weight. Having fitted my C/F wheels and feeling the difference in ride quality, I don't want to reverse that gain by adding more weight.

Couldn't that white thing be painted black or whatever color?

It could be painted any colour you like. I was actually thinking that something like that made of plastic would be great. Light, cheap, easy to replace if it got damaged. I was actually thinking it would add another nice highlight to my bike if I painted it the same blue as the other bits and bobs, or perhaps paint it gold to match the Yella Forks. Very Happy

And to think you would label me as crass and vulgar if I put the chrome tank on my bike. WTF!

If that white bit was made of C/F, it would blend in, be very light and they are renown for their strength. If you already had a scratched up CARC, glueing/bonding C/F to it would hide the damage.

I might have to use your borrowed CARC Pete to investigate this.

You could also just wait. If you dump the bike and scratch up the CARC you can get the Stucchi version to hide the scratches.

That is clever!   cheers

I originally bought the Guzzitech guard for the Norge.

Then, after getting the GRiSO, realized that panniers might protect Norge’s CARC and swapped it to the GRiSO.

Good thing, too.  In September 2013, found myself slammed to the pavement from some unseen sand  Sad in a near 90-degree righthand turn on SR 42 (what a grand, grand road!) in SW Virginia.

Here are some pix of guard and gear … and first aid  Wink — mostly for bruised ego  Embarassed — on getting home.

Note that I had to add some washers to get guard to “stand off” from the CARC, as I was worried that it might collapse at the mounting points and defeat the purpose.  Not.   Am mindful of Pete’s concerns over damaging brake housing, tho learned of that after-the-fact, and, based on my dump’s results, inclined to keep it on.

Note, too, that was not "lucky" enough to simply bend my rear-brake lever, but the pork chop broke at its mounting point.   Crying or Very sad

Am also inclined to continue wearing ATGATT; Lordy, I’d be even uglier had I not had on that full-face helmet.

Best to all my fellow “dumpers,”

Bill
