PostSubject: Stock Exhaust - Can it be modified for sound?   Stock Exhaust - Can it be modified for sound? Icon_minitime1Sun Aug 16, 2020 10:46 pm

Hey,

Love'n this thing....

Question: Has anyone tried modifying the stock exhaust with the aim of getting a slightly better sound? I actually kinda like the stock look, and the stock sound is pretty good... I'm just used to my old 1000 SP with a slightly cut back baffle... a full throated beautiful sound....

Can the stock exhaust be modified to open up the sound?

Thanks,
Richard

There are many aftermarket mufflers that are lighter and work as well or better than the stock pipe and there are maps developed for them as well as the stock pipe. Simply gutting the stock pipe or even just punching holes in the catalytic converters will not Improve the performance and while noisier is unlikely to improve the tone of the exhaust.

The stock muffler actually works very well. The reason most people change it is to reduce weight or for cosmetic purposes but a lot of experimentation has been done and we've found the the best performance for a road machine is achieved with a physically long pipe with a dB killer installed and a map to suit. Using a pipe without a dB killer installed but especially a short, un-baffled one will gut the bottom end and midrange while only giving a very meagre boost in top end hp.

Removing the airbox snorkel increases the intake honk appreciably, (There is nothing to be gained by drilling the airbox lid or fitting a shitty K&N type filter.) without turning the bike into a noisy moron-mobile and any of the common aftermarket cans, with a dB killer makes quite enough racket to drown out the rattles and squeaks emanating from the engine. At least on most bikes. Mine might be the exception as its motor sounds like it's broken! Always has for 127,000km! Laughing

How does one remove that snorkel thing? looks like it is two molded together rubber parts with a flange that for my feeble attempts refused to dislodge from the air filter box? don't want to cut or destroy the things... as for exhausts, i can fully recommend the Mistral High pipe (in any fashion) and Marks Map... mine is a revelation with it. I have the dB killer in but drilled the end-hole out to same diameter as the holes on the side of the dB killer. Now a fruity, sonorous sound that gets better with revs, still "quiet" at idle or low throttle openings.

You are the descendant of Vikings! Grab hold of the bloody thing and tear it out! Really! It's that easy! Imagine you were working up to the 'Blood Eagle' on some unfortunate Saxon monk!

You might remove the screws holding the the entire assembly in and take it out and then pull it apart if your having trouble with it. You might need to look at the air filter anyway.

Yes, i will summon my viking heritage and channel the might of the long ships, the broad swords, going berserk on mushrooms, when we went to "Brittany" and pillaged, raped and beat seven shades of shite out those heathen Saxon blighters. Yes Sir!

Sigh. Britons, not Saxons. You must have been completely off your little No9rse faces to not even realise who you were beating up.

Britons, Saxons, Frenchies whatever.. Halcyon days indeed! I do stand corrected and offer my humble apologies!

Remove the airbox lid. Snorkel will slide out most easily.

I like the look of the stock exhaust and on my GRiSO my view of style is more of an imperative than weight saving.   flower

My question is, if the stock exhaust performs well, then can the bike produce as much torque and long legged drive on the standard pipe as it does on the long termignoni?
