[edited to fix pictures]

Howdy,

not to get all "farkleriffic" but I thought some of you might like my impressions of a few items I got for multi-day trips that I was able to test on a 2 1/2 day ride last weekend. Mainly I just wanted a few things to make life easier for "first world" touring, not conquer the Kalahari. Or the local Starbucks. I mainly focusing on how it worked on the GRiSO since all this stuff has a million reveiws elsewhere.

Here's the stuff I've put together:

Givi A240 windscreen
Kriega US-10 bag + tank bag adapter
Ventura "Tour Pack" setup.
RAM mount - mcy stem insert & generic cell phone / EZ Pass holder
GoPro mount

The windscreen I mentioned in the screen thread so I won't repeat it here other than to say for a small screen I liked it - looked good on the GRiSO and did it's job.

Kriega bag - (http://www.kriega.us/us10-motorcycle-bag-luggage/) - I wanted a small bag to use all the time and liked the idea of something that went on and off easily. They have a whole line of "US" tail-section bags that clip onto each other, but also sell an adapter for the tank that you can leave on all the time. I like the bag - but lots of straps and buckles! The 4 straps for mounting the bag to the adapter are *not* permanent, so if you're worried about kleptos you have to remove the straps when you leave the bike. Not ideal for sure. It does hold the bag securely though, and it's nice having a little bag for stuff so you don't have to root around in the bigger bag. Other downside of the US-10 bag: no shoulder strap (although I'm going to get some clips and a strap from REI and make my own), It's weird because the US-20 bag does have a shoulder strap. Anyways, mounting the adpter to the GRiSO was a little tricky at the front because of the tightness of everything. I ended up removing the "wings" to make sure I wasn't trapping wires, etc under the straps when I put them around the frame. I've left the adapter on the bike since I installed it last month. I'd give the setup a B+ because of how fiddly it is. I do like the bag.

Ventura rack system - (http://www.ventura-mca.com) - I didn't really want saddlebags so I got this based on lots of positive reviews. I have the "sport rack" for just about town, and the "pack rack" for putting the big bag on. The bag I got was the "Euro Rally" bag - 44 liters expandable to 56. It's big and holds a lot. More than I needed for a weekend so I ended up throwing in a bunch of other stuff just 'cause Smile  The bag was very secure, didn't move about and I didn't feel it affected handling in any way. It is really easy to get on / off; much easier than the Kriega; just two velcro straps and slide on / off the frame. Thumbs up on this one. With the bolts included with the frame rails you loose the neat bungie spools under the seat. I'll visit the hardware store to get longer bolts so I can put them back on. Oh, and with the bag off the bike you def. look like you're sportin' a weird sissybar, but swapping between the grabrail / pack-rack / sport-rack takes all of 2 minutes.

RAM mount - (Mcy stem mount, Universal phone/radio holder) - wanted to be able to mount my phone where I could see it (using it as a GPS) and have it easily accessible and not in my pocket, but the handlebat mount I have on another bike wouldn't fit the fat GRiSO bar, so I tried the stem mount. Problem is the stem hole on the GRiSO isn't a constant diameter all the way down - it opens up in there (or to be more accurate, the stem nut isn't super thick). This mount should really be flush all the way down and the rubber bit should fully contact the inside of the stem. This didn't work on the bike so it stood proud and wasn't as secure as it should be, especially with the arm + phone holder + phone. It never moved up and down so it wouldn't fall out, but you could twist it left/right. However with the bar risers there it didn't have much to go in either direction.
Since the phone didn't bounce around I felt it was good enough. Biggest downside was that it all obscured the dash. I could see turn signal, etc. lights but not the speedo without trying. The tach I could see. It was also hard to tighten down the arm since there's not a lot of space there, still - once it was tight I didn't have to touch it. I liked that the phone was central and behind the windscreen. I've ordered a different bar mount and will switch to that. Luckily all this stuff is cheap so I'm only out about 18 bucks. I'll give it a "B" because it did work, even with it not as securely mounted and did the job.
The phone holder I liked. I have a Nexus 4 in a thin rubber case and it had no problem holding that very securely. It will also hold an EZ-Pass (US toll road radio thingy). It comes with 3 different sized "fingers" should you need to carry something thicker. I used the shortest ones.

GoPro mount - (53mm Fork Clamp, GoPro Adapter Arm) - this is a really nicely made clamp that goes on the fork tube above the triple tree. It is however really expensive (75$). It mounted up very securely and with the GoPro adapter held the camera securely (although, again, because of the limited space it was hard to get my fingers in there to tighten it down, so I could swivel the camera, but it wasn't floppy). Since I was just goofing around (I rarely use a GoPro since I'm too lazy to edit the movies, and "my bike ride" type vids are generally boring) I may get the Tech4 - RAM adapter (if they make one) and see if I can mount my phone using this one. I'll say B+ since it's well made, does the job, but too expensive. Does look trick.

Nice write up and pics, thanks for posting. I'm pretty sure I'm getting a Ventura sport rack on mine as well but won't know until next week. I'm hoping I can rig some sort of back rest for my wife out of it

They make all sorts of warnings about not using it as a backrest. Not sure if that's litigation control or not, but the bracket *is* pretty much just a hollow tube with a 90 degree bend and does not have any support bracing. I wouldn't want to lean back on it with too much force.

The Ventura pack system is very utilitarian (made in New Zealand by the by) and works very well. In terms of a back rest for the missus though, it will be very much lacking. The construction consists of VERY mild steel and is only supported by the four bobbin mounts under the tail section. The specs that come with the setup goes so far as to say that the brackets should in no way be used as a backrest for a pillion and I can confirm this. There is emphatically minimal support for any kind of pressure on the framework. In fact, packs of any weight are recommended only to sit upon the pillion perch and not upon the rearward auxiliary rack. It will flex, and it will bend. This is absolutely NOT a backrest option.

It works very well for what it is designed to do, but don't mistake it for anything more than a stable platform for the Ventura luggage.

To add to your list.
I have found in my travels some saddle bags. Komine SA-213

Ebay clicky

Online store clicky

I may get these in lieu of the mounted type for the occasional overnight trip

I've had a few ventura setups and went with the rack only and use either a large dry ortlieb bag or givi dry bag for different mounting options. Plenty of room for a week with hotel wash light gear. Also have the huge MG tank bag. I have other dry bags to use in a pinch. Occasionally carry MSR fuel cans but haven't made a more secure rack for them.

Excellent article and will probably cost me some money. I keep looking at that Kriega stuff, may just have to pull the trigger on it. Mostly for the XR650L.

Great article. Thumbs Up

I use a Wolfman dry duffle with Rok straps. Very hardwearing and pulls down nicely.

Thanks - after continued use of the Kriega bag I still really like it. I'm not sure why since the whole clipping it the tank thing is kind of a pain, but there you are.
I wish they made a sholder strap so you could carry it like a man-purse, er, I mean "technical satchel", when it's off the bike. I tried to find some clippy things to make my own (i.e. a strap that clips into existing connector-clips) but haven't found a source. I would have thought it'd be standard but nooooo Smile  I could always buy a pair of their compression straps and cut them up for the clips, but at $17...

and +1 on the Rok straps - they're really handly.

Couldn't you get the strap from the US-20 or US-30 bag? Maybe the clips as wel?

Rok straps are nice as are the Kriega stuff. I like the dry bags but bought the wrong backpack (not waterproof)

I use the Kriega 20 with two of the 10s on the back.  Pretty easy to use and I like the "smaller" profile.
