Unfortunately, she's not from my own family, but a close friend who grew up in the NAPA Valley and still lives there, up in the mountains above Calistoga is from a long line of vintners. He chose this picture of his grandmother on a 1914(?) Harley in front of her prized grape vines for his wine label. I wish I had a grandmother who was this bad-ass! Matter of fact, I think I'll just adopt her as my own.

Here's a picture of my maternal grandmother, Marta Tofanelli on her 1914 Harley Davidson, posing proudly in front of her prized vitis vinifera vines, circa 1924

I loved my Nonna Tofanelli, and her passion for motorcycles (and wine) rubbed off on me at an early age. Here I am on my cousin Vito's Yamaha, circa 1968 - ecstatic to be on it, but aching to be old enough to have one of my very own.
