PostSubject: Hello fom New Zealand. Looking to import GRiSO from the US   Hello fom New Zealand. Looking to import GRiSO from the US Icon_minitime1Mon Jan 12, 2015 11:20 pm

HI. I have just joined this forum as I have fallen head over for the GRiSO. I am looking to import one from the US to New Zealand and was wondering if anyone has heard of this being done before.  I have been on the net and seen a dealer that seems to have a good selection of bikes. They are Moto International in Seattle WA 98103 USA. Has anyone had any dealings with them.

I know a couple of things have to happen, one being the headlight needs to be changed as low beam points to the wrong side. Is this easy to do at a reasonable cost. The second, is it possible to change the digital speedo from miles to Kms per hour.

Any advise, ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Mark

G'day matey from the sheep land and welcome. I believe you can change mph to kph in instrument settings. As for the headlight, you could turn it upside down. Benefit would be brighter low beam. Not taking the piss, honestly. Anyway, wherever you choose to buy your GRiSO, you will love it nonetheless.

Although the MG site still had the non-SE listed. Also the SE was a Tenni. Page not updated for a while? Very Happy

Have looked in NZ and they are quite pricey The MG site is out of date as are the prices. Any GRiSO cost 24500. Can possible land one from the states and save a couple dollars. The headlight can not be turned upside down as it won't pass VIN here.

In Oz a GRiSO, or any 'Big' Guzzi is a $22,000 plus proposition if bought new. I would imagine the situation in NZ is probably worse.

You can pick up a flat Tappet GRiSO in the US for what second hand? A little used 2010 would be a seven, eight grand bike? Maybe less?

Sure you have to pay for shipping and you won't have any warranty or shit like that but if you do need something like the roller conversion you'll still be streets ahead cost wise.

As for Moto International? Their reputation is second to none.

Some information on importing a Guzzi from USA to NZ can be found on this thread at the WG forum.

Welcome to the forum. Our numbers are growing. Soon we will make a bid for the west island and make Roperville the capital. All hail the ghetto.

Thanks for all the imput. What would be the expected mileage (km's) out of a well maintained 1100cc and 1200cc GRiSO.
The net is full of chit chat about the cam shafts. An example is that a 2007 GRiSO here in nz with about 30 000 km's on the clock will still sell for around the $10 000 mark. The less the K's the higher the price.
Also has anyone done the roller cam conversion and how much would it cost (approximate) me if I were to go with an older bike.
Cheers Mark

It's not the cams, it's the tappets that fail and destroy the cams.

The answer of how much it costs to rollerise is not one with a simple answer as how much work and expense is involved depends on what engine and year the bike is.

Early machines need the heads removed to shim the inlet valves, later machines don't. There is also a considerable disparity in cost between the various kits.

As far as can be told with the limited time that they have been in production it would seem so. Having said that there are many, many people who have never experienced any issues with their flat Tappet bikes.

As time goes on there seems to be more evidence mounting that my supposition regarding the cause of the failures has merit.

Thanks Pete.
I am a mechanic by trade but have been out of the trade for a long time. I have always ridden KTM dirt bikes as does my son. I have carried out all the maintenance etc myself including the valve clearances.
Are the Grisos easy to work on, setting valve clearances etc and how often do the valve clearances need to be looked at. I only ask because the nearest reputable dealer is about 4 hours away.

Don't come a lot easier. Get Guzzidiag up and running, buy a decent set of balance guages and yer ready to go. Tappets are screw and lock-nut and hang out in the breeze. A full service takes 2.5-3.0 hours unless you are doing stuff like clutch and brake fluid in which case add an extra half hour. Obviously non standard stuff like greasing Swingarm bearings etc. adds time.

Whereabouts are you MVH053?
There maybe other good spannermen around who are not at reputable dealers.

Good spanners at Mount Motorcycles, Mt Maunganui. Speak to Ray. Mechanics not parts fitters.

Did you see that the Guzzi dealer in Morrinsville is selling their black devil demo bike. $22K
May be worth the trip. At least for the ride.
PM me when you are riding up this neck of the woods and we should meet up somewhere.
Adios

Wife and I went over last week to see that. Very nice. Just to clarify, I am still on a restricted license so I cant get one yet anyway.
I have always ridden dirt bikes here and some road riding overseas while living in Europe (unlicensed)

Thought it was time to get road legal. Currently ride a MT07. Have looked at a lot of bikes as you do when looking at your next bike. Just love the GRiSO. There is nothing quite out there like it.

When we spoke to the bloke at the Morrinsville dealer he couldn't even tell me how much a service cost but thought it would be about $700 for a standard service. Asked him about the tappet problems and received a blank look. Can't say I was to inspired, hence all the questions I have for grisoghetto. I just don't want to buy a bike that after 10 000 km is going to cost me in a major way because of problems.

Blank look...great start to a commercial relationship.
With what you can learn to prevent and avoid here in the Ghetto, and what you can ask from the experts like Pete etc, and your mechanical skills you should be safe. It is still a machine, it just has more soul.
Now that the mapping is manageable (big thanks to Mark and his little helpers) the bases are largely covered.
Good luck.
