Speedo issues Empty
PostSubject: Speedo issues   Speedo issues Icon_minitime1Sat Mar 07, 2015 2:03 pm

Ok, so i have no speedo and every now and then the service light keeps coming on. I am also suffering from condensation in the speedo.

I have some questions, how do i open up the speedo to get rid of the condensation it looks pretty sealed!

I have looked at both ends of the speedo pickup, at the wheel end it is a sealed unit held on with two bolts and at the other end plugged into the loom. All looks dry to me? i guess there is supposed to be silicone in the loom connection to prevent water ingress?? Any other ideas?

The guzzi diag cables turned up today, is that going to give me a better idea of what may be wrong? i have looked at the errors in the dash but its not obvious (to me anyway!) what they are.

Happy to investigate further just need some direction before i plug in the cables for the first time.

many thanks

GuzziDiag will not give any further alarms apart from what you already get. GD simply reports on the issues already in the dash.

Speedo sensors have been know to get wet and not work. Pull it off and dry it with your or your wife's or your girlfriends hair dryer so it properly dries out. Test it and if it comes good, seal it with silicone and put it back when the silicone is dry - just because it looks ok doesn't mean it is.

Service light being intermittent could be the oil pressure sensor or simply the electrical connection on top - right royal PITA to get to though.

Moisture in your speedo is a little harder to fix. They are able to be disassembled, but I have not done it, you could try it yourself or send it to Carmo in the Netherlands for attention.

Let us know how you get on.

The service warning is almost certainly due to the speedo sensor being duff. Early ones were prone to water ingress and could be dried out BUT I would imagine there would be a limited number of times you could expect to do this before corrosion or contamination gets the better of it. If it were mine I'd simply bite the bullet and buy a new sensor, the new ones seem to be better made but I'd still seal around where the wires go into the sensor with a bit of silastic just to be sure.

As for the condensation in the dash? It depends how bad it is. Mine does it too but not badly enough for me to do anything about it. Yonks ago there were suggestions of drilling small holes in the back of the dash casing to allow air to circulate and get rid of moisture. I personally never have as drilling holes in the back of something stuffed full of printed circuits and a LCD never struck me as something that would be likely to end well.

Pete

thanks guys, Pete, i too am hoping the same thing and also now having seen how sealed the speedo unit is will live with the condensation.

off with the sensor and out with the dryer :-)

i will let you know if it have any success, and probably order a replacement anyway, suprising how often you look at your speedo!!
