Just read on another site
Another owner was asking if it was correct or not, he did not get an answer and I am curious
It was suggested that 'one should apply the clutch on start up when in neutral'.

Why? There's a cut out that won't allow it to start if it's in gear which was the old argument for pulling the clutch before you hit the button.

Hi all
Just had a dig thru my 'use and maintenance book'
At page 44 in the starting section it say's

"completely pull the clutch lever (5) and set the gear shift lever (9) to neutral (green LED 'N' on").
"NOTE - keep the clutch lever (5) completely pulled until the engine starts".

I wonder why ????

Toilet paper doesn't come with instructions.

I wonder why???

Edit.
Just remembered, my older Guzzi's would show the green neutral light, but it only meant you were close.
It was possible to still be in gear, was also possible to be in neutral with no green light.

Well, the Guzzi world IS, for the most part, of a belt and suspenders (braces) crowd...

Not sure how to incorporate the corn cob pipe into this analogy.

Hi all
Sorry to bother you all with what some appear to be a stupid question !!!

BUT

My operators book appears to say, the way I read it, that one should apply the clutch lever even thou one is in neutral.
I have always just started up when the neutral light is on not bothering to apply the clutch.

I thought that this was a reasonable question to ask, but it appears to some not to be for which I apologize.

I will be more careful before I ask another.

Have a great day.

It was a fair question WT, I had never taken the trouble to read the fine print. I suspect it is a CYA recommendation. Just in case the cut-out were to fail when the bike is in gear sending the bike on a lurch.

Corporate liability is better served by telling owners to just engage the clutch whenever starting the bike.

I've never done it myself when the bike is in neutral.

No problem with the question. I was just wondering why it needed to be asked again after it had been answered. Sorry if you didn't understand my reply.

Yeah, when I read such stuff in an owners manual I just assume, that the manufacturer assumes, we are all numpty's. Like running in procedures telling you to ride slow and easy for 1000km.

The race guru's will tell you it is the worst running-in technique, it is for your personal safety so manufacturers don't get sued.

MGS01, running-in is completed in 100km, but it comes with slicks and you can only ride it in a controlled environment, not normally sold to learners. jocolor

The GRiSO has a one touch start which would make it difficult to catch the bike if it started in gear for what ever reason. I never herd of it happening, but Murphy's Law...In saying that I don't use the clutch as I rely on the technology while it's working, till I learn my lesson not to.

All the 03 maps do that. It does it as the revs are increased by ~300 RPM to allow a smoother take off, in some twisted Guzziland logic.
