Ear Plugs and Tinnitus Empty
PostSubject: Ear Plugs and Tinnitus   Ear Plugs and Tinnitus Icon_minitime1Sat Apr 18, 2015 6:46 pm

Ok a rider mod of sorts, so I'm posting it here. I ride with protective gear all the time except for hearing protection. Full face carbon helmet and mid-size Givi windscreen on mostly daily 45 mile rides at 90%+ open road speeds. The wind noise is noticeable but not deafening. I know ear plugs 'make sense' but I'm not wearing them (yet). I've read stories of the annoyance tinnitus can be for a person. affraid So, who's thought about this also? Product recommendations?

Sorry mate, can't hear you. Can you hit the keypad a little harder.

You get used to the air compressor with a leaky fitting, hissing in your head all day. Too late for me.
Never used ear protection, shitty helmets from the 70's were so noisy. Do 600 miles at 100mph and you were deaf as a post for the next 2 days.

Use them. I rode for years without and have tinnitus now as a result. But I use them now anyway because less wind noise lessens fatigue.

Use them. Don't think about it. I have bad tinnitus and have no desire to make it worse. Half a lifetime of riding without them sure didn't help.

It could also have been that Rose Tattoo concert I went to in the 80's. Fuck me lonesome they were loud.

I've tried eleventy types of plug, and the silicon based ones you can mould into your ear are the best IMO, but you can only use them a few times before they get yucky. I've got some NoNoise Motorsport ones that have a tuned port in them that I'm using now, but they only cut the wind noise by about 60%. I'm planning on seeing if I can get some custom made ones from a hearing specialist.

I just use the ones from the drugstore. Cheap so if (when) I lose one or they get gross no problem.

I hate it when I hit the highway without them in and I notice it for a while after getting off the bike.

Drugstore variety, super-soft, sold as a sleep aid works best for me. Years of riding without them, full-volume rock music, and thirty-five years of building heavy metal sculptures, the damage is done and the ringing is permanent. I never ride without them anymore, but should have learned my lesson a long time ago. Esther wears custom-made ones she bought at the International Motorcycle Show and swears by them. If I weren't so cheap, I might go that route, but prefer to throw them away when they get disgusting.

I wreaked my hearing using an industrial sand blaster in my late 20's. Now a particular tone of a loud noise can set off a tinnitus noise in my head. the only thing that gets rid of it is time, and a conscious effort thinking of other things, anything other than the ringing noise, like a past sexual encounter etc Laughing Please , Wear ear plugs, protect your hearing NOW

I use these. Have a plastic core that you push in to make a better seal. I get the ones that are corded together.

I Just buy them off ebay.

Reckon most will experiment. This works for me.

Used for many years the Howardlight Laser Lights. In present and the last 3 years i always use custom made ones an dthe only thing i repend is, that i haven´t bought the custom made earlier. Perfect fitment, good reduction of the wind noise.

I love them

Always use them.  The foam type. Just part of the routine.

I use plugs (industrial OHS foam type - bought in bulk) and now that I'm used to wearing them I actually prefer to ride with them in. I can still hear the exhaust note and without all the wind/helmet noise.

Use some form of hearing protection whenever you ride or are around loud noises. Tinnitus gets progressively worse. I have had the 24/7 variety for about 25 years, it can alter your life. I have been a shooter since I was a young man and I imagine the damage began back then. Many of us used cigarette filters to muffle the sound of a large caliber weapons, that proved to be inadequate, LOL. I have some spent time at audiologists, and hearing aid experts, the consensus is always the same once it's starts it will continue to get louder and the duration will be longer, interesting note, alcohol intensifies tinnitus.  I use the foam type (33db) of protectors, get a whole jar at Wall Mart for about $12.00, that can be inserted into the ear canal. I also have several custom molded ear pieces that I use when shooting. These are really effective however really uncomfortable while wearing a helmet. Don't screw around with your hearing one buddy.

^^This.

I have never understood the reluctance to use protective gear. Earplugs are so inexpensive and so easy to get used to wearing. There are too many things I want to hear before I go.

Like Enzo, I've also been into shooting activities for years.  I like the re-usable Peltors/AO Safety (tri-flange). Comfy, good protection, and at around $2USD, will last for years.

Understand. I use ear muffs when doing noisy work around the house (mowing, edging, grinding, sawing etc.) and have always been respectful of hearing as a gift. I know hearing damage is cumulative like sun exposure and cancer risk. Just never thought till now of helmeted hearing protection. I'll get some plugs today. I can't imagine the hearing loss of those riders with out any gear whatsoever including a windshield.

This is a subject no-one should ever doubt about. Tinnitus can be a nightmare. I know some friends who need to take pills to deal with it, at least the psychic part.

I use moulded ear plugs and let them test every year because the inside ear is changing form through the years.
Much less fatigue and keeping a good hearing is pretty important on the bike.

I got an earplug kit from a military suppliers catalogue, basically you mix two types of rubber paste and mould a piece for each ear so you get a really good fit. they are washable and unlike foam plugs don't fall on the deck when you remove your lid

Aye. That's an issue with the foam plugs. They always seem to wriggle out of my ears while riding too.

Agree with others here...use ear protection. I worked the flightline while serving in the U.S. Air Force (1969 - 1972) and even though I wore muffs and plugs, I still got a terrible case of tinnitus. I currently keep my daily completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aids while riding. The aids have a compression circuit that controls the noise levels and they are comfortable while wearing a helmet. Similar CIC noise suppressors are available to those that find the foam plugs just don't work for them. Keep your hearing as long as you can!

Rode with some purple foamies found at el Wal Marte (32 dB or so) and must say it was a better experience. Seems that with the wind noise just about shut off, you have to watch the speedo more often. I should have done this years ago . . . recommended body mod for all.

Single best of motorcycle kit there is. Get the custom molded ones if you can. Usually at the large bike shows or motorcycle events there are vendors that provide the service. Seek them out first, they take an impression, enjoy the show and pick them up on the way out. Usually $40-50
I cant ride without them now as the experience is much better.

I've had "flight line" tinnitus since I was 12 years old. I'm pretty much used to it. If nothing else, it extends conversations with pretty girls.

"What was that?" "One more time..." Cool

Just playin' it cool.

I use this style of earplug [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] . They stay put and last years. I just clean them with alcohol when they get particularly nasty. I got tinnitus in my left ear after attending the MotoGP race with an ear infection. I was riding my too loud Victory at the time and now whenever I ride the Victory it really sets off the buzzing/ringing in my ear. Still love the bike though.

when you go out to buy disposable ear plugs the box of 200  ...shop them around , try safety supply houses , you should be able to buy them for $30 to $ 40  dollars a box depending on model ...there are some  stores out there charging way too much ...
just saying................

You may be putting them in wrong ....same thing happened to me b4 I was taught the proper way...which is
roll them into a point at one end , tilt your head away to the side , pull on the top of your ear to open up the ear canal insert the plug ..release your ear and wait for them to expand ...works a treat and they do not fall out
its in the instructions ..... Rolling Eyes Smile   as well
