Stripped Rocker Cover Bolt Empty
PostSubject: Stripped Rocker Cover Bolt   Stripped Rocker Cover Bolt Icon_minitime1Thu Jun 25, 2015 10:04 am

Re assembling after a valve check and one of the Rocker Cover bolts stripped with very little effort. I removed the bolt and out came with it what looks like a spring wrapped around the threads. It looks like one of those Helicoil inserts. Has anyone encountered this before? The bolt hole is now smooth and clean no sign of threads. This is the side of the engine that had quite a bit of the white mayo stuff in the cover.

Thinking of retap and find a suitable bolt or?

Suggestions would be appreciated as there are usually solutions I have not thought of.

Thanks

I'd think a helicoil or time sert would be the way to go. The bit that 'Looks like a spring' will simply be the stripped aluminium from the thread. It is important to remember that these are small bolts not performing a terribly difficult task. They don't need to be cranked down to twelvety zillion mile-tons! If you have a leak cranking down the bolts harder won't cure it but it seems to be common practice.

If the worst comes to the worst and you can't fix it I've got lots of cambox/rocker supports from bikes I've rollerised.

Thanks Pete
I am going to get the Heliocoil kit and give that a go. I am one those that needs to remind myself not to overtighten thus I have a couple of torque wrenches, this particular one required very little effort but it could be I ovetightened on the last check and it didnt need much to finish it off.

Valves were pretty good. But not perfect, loose 006 but not quite 007 on the intakes and almost 009 on exhausts. Thats at 10,000KMS and I checked them at 5000kms but made no adjustments as they were all in spec.
Will let you know how I make out with the Helicoil when I get the kit.
Cheers

There's no need to to torque the cover bolts down. A firm nip is all they require. Thumbs Up
