PostSubject: Behold! The light of blazing underpants!   Behold! The light of blazing underpants! Icon_minitime1Fri Jun 19, 2015 12:04 am

Went into town to drop a new oil pressure switch off to a bloke this arvo as I wanted a ride. Came back to Bungendore, stopped at the pub for a beer, went back out to the bike, fired it up and WHOAH! Dirty great service warning and the oil light is on!

Now I'd had no problems with the bike and it wasn't on when I stopped. There was no other evidence of a problem so after I had stopped and re-started it a few times and the problem was still there I thought 'Bollocks'. The only thing that would cause such a caastrophic failure would be the oil pump gear going west and I've never seen that so I rode it home and it was golden. If it was going to die it would of locked up after about 200 metres.

So, it's just the switch. Oh the irony. I just supply my last 'Old Style' switch to the bloke in Canberra and mine fucks out on the way home! Laugh? I soaked the seat! Laughing

pete,
i had same problem with a previous GRiSO, so i plumbed in a wet line to a good old fashioned pressure guage teed off from where the px sx screws in. So now if i get oil px warning i can look at guage n see all ok. Comforting if it happened long way from home, tho of course i haven't had a sx go wrong since the mod!

Played all those games years ago when I was paranoid Very Happy . Really though unless an engine has had a major component failure an oil pump isn't going to be something that will fail. It's a pretty simple device.

If I'd got the warning suddenly, while moving, I'd of killed the engine and towed it home. As it was I stopped at the pub, turned the bike off and had a beer, restarted it and had a problem. Chances of it being a real issue, about twenty-twelve-billion to one!

I understand the "blazing underpants" bit.
I was fed a hot curry last night, my oil pressure is thru the roof.

Who sung "Down down down in my burning ring of fire"?

Eric Burdon.

He probably enjoyed a vindaloo too.

Pete, the oil pressure switch lasted 90,000km+. Not too bad in my opinion considering I have read many fail earlier than that.

Did it again yesterday, outside the pub after my Sunday ride Very Happy. Looks like I'll have to go in and swap the switch. What a bore.

Pete, it may be as simple as a dodgy electrical connection on top - mine still does it sporadically and I've learnt to be patient as it will stop the next start (does that make sense? probably not...)

Yeah, I'm not worried, it's just annoying having a bloody great light and service warning glaring at me. It's just the switch. If there was a problem it would of locked up.

That might have been Eric Burdon (w or w/o the animals,) but it was Johnny Cash who sang "down, down, down in A burning ring of fire..." Although the song was actually written by Merle Kilgore.

PostSubject: Oil Pressure Switch Hissy Fit   Behold! The light of blazing underpants! Icon_minitime1Sun Aug 02, 2015 11:57 am

Now mine seems to be acting the maggot, twice after I stopped the engine after a long spin and went to restart I got the dreaded RED oil can and SERVICE Triangle and then after I stopped again and let it sit for a while it cleared itself Question The last time it didn't clear after a short stop and being fairly confident that a dodgy oil switch is the problem and not the oil pump I continued on cautiously for a few Km waiting for the smell of a seized engine but thankfully all seems well scratch

As others here have suggested I have ordered a BMW switch that will hopefully be a proper match, it doesn't have the same part number as the one I have seen on the forum here but I am hoping that the part number in (1428713) will do as it looks to be similar to the one  #1546836 that someone posted that they had bought on e bay

For anyone that has been through the Red oil can joy this is the one I ordered, Does it look similar to the original?

Well I have been putting off lifting the fuel tank for a while so I will at last get to wrestle with that lovely fuel connector under the tank!! bounce

Hey GC
Sorry to hear of your oil pressure issue but it could have been worse I suppose.
I like you are a bit worried about lifting the fuel tank, please let us know how you go !!! I would be interested, from what I read the 'quick release fitting' is not so quick ! And it is plastic that can break if you force it.
If you do break it your in the crap then !!!
Anyway, please let us know how you go, I will have to go down this road sometime so your experience will help.
Have a safe and great day.

You can always just drop the fuel lines off the injectors and leave the quick disconnect attached.

Allegedly disconnecting the fuel pump and turning the engine over for a few seconds with the starter button makes it easier. The line is depressurized and the quick disconnects might actually disconnect.

Thanks Pete and Mark
Makes sence just to remove from injectors !
Does the fuel system hold pressure for long after shut down ?
When I turn on my ignition I always hear the fuel pump pressurizing it's system prior to start which would intimate to me that the system has depressurized since last use.
Those who have had problems with the quick disconnect in the past probably did not give time for the system to depressirize ?

Just telling you what I've heard. That's why I say 'allegedly'. Never tried it myself. Tony says it works, and I believe him.

Hi again Mark
I suppose it's easy to just ensure the system is depressurized, just pull fuse 'c' (I think) and kick him over a few times, this would ensure no pressure.
I suppose the factory would not provide the quick detach if there was no way to use it, would they ?
Good chat, thanks
Makes me think a bit
Have a good day

When the ignition is turned on the pump runs for four seconds to pressurise the system. How long it takes to bleed down I have no idea but any time the engine stops the pump will cut out after four seconds. It's a safety thing so that in the event of a crash when the engine stops the pump stops pumping ensuring that if the fuel line has ruptured it won't just keep spewing out fuel as long as the ignition is on.
