Ok so the problem remains and it got worse. I brought it to the dealer as a last ditch effort. They checked both cyclinder AND the timing just to make sure and according to them everything was in spec. The noise gets louder/worse the hotter the bike gets. At about 4k if I accelerate hard it makes a terrifying sound. Like a box of rocks vibrating very fast. My bike is a 2015 GRiSO with 4700 miles on the clock. Had the dealer do an oil change at 4000.

Perhaps there's another member of the Ghetto with some smarts nearby who can have a look and listen. How far are you from Salem? Doug and Jacqui are both well conversant with 8V oddities and might be able to offer a useful ear.

Not a bad ride really. If I could somehow link up with ANYONE on this issue that can tell me what is going on that would be fantastic

Absolutely willing to take a look. I have to run out to my mom's in western Mass tomorrow, but if you can make it down to Salem on Sunday, I'd be more than happy to take a look.

I'm going to be at the garage doing a little map tweaking/loading/experimenting anyway.

Googly-maps says it's only 106km/60miles. Easy! Even if there is something wrong it's unlikely to fuck itself in such a short distance. Thumbs Up Just take it nice and easy and try to keep it quiet. Noisy is usually bad.

I'm a bit intrigued as to what they meant by having 'checked the timing'? Did they mean valve timing? That requires some greater than usual disassembly. If ignition timing? Well, that's coded into the map and all you can really do to check it is hook up PADS and watch the advance as you open the throttle, it won't tell you a lot unless there is something glaringly wrong.

I'm wondering if they set the LH side at TDC and did the valves and then just did the RH side without rotating the crank another 270 degrees? I've seen it done before......

Does this GRiSO have the latest map in it? If not, we can load the one I have for the GRiSO in it while it's here.

It should have the GRS8V-03 but you could flick the flat tappet 'Stock' map into it and see how it works. It seems that my problems with the maps now my bike is rollerised are more likely to be due to the fact there is something amiss with my motor than huge differences in the cams.

Let's make sure there isn't something mechanically fucking with this lump first though.

I'd Griso8v-03 the latest of Marks maps. I'm not sure I have that one anyway.

Have you got the Beetlemap for 'Stock' G8? That's what Jacqui is running isn't it?

Louder/worse when it gets hot and terrifying above 4 K sounds like it's pinging. What does the plug look like?

If you listen to the audio on the vid it doesn't sound like detonation, it really sounds like mal-adjusted tappets. It also looks like the bike is jumping around like its only running on one cylinder at idle. Doug just mentioned in an email that perhaps part of the problem might be that the shop buggered a plug cap when they had the lids off.

My WAG on this one is that the valves were checked with the LH piston at TDC and then either the crank wasn't moved and the RH valves were done as well OR they were done on the wrong stroke. This and maybe a torn plug cap and shorting spark.

My guess is Doug that you'll find the valves all wrong, at least on the right, and the TB's will never of been touched. No wonder the poor thing is running like a mad woman's shit!

See I myself never opened the left bank only the right. Ill doubble check the left bank tomorrow. I am running marks stock 8v map. I will mention that the ticking did stsrt shortly AFTER my break in service at 900 miles and I am strangely getting a rich smell when idling and start up. This problem appeared over night also. I parked the bike for the night next morning is started semi hard and clicked but quietly when it first appeared also had LOTS of popping/backfire for a week or so also but cleared up. The symptoms appeared nearly 3k miles back but took the light tapping then as just normal guzzi noise but what its like now something is absolutely off.

Id appreciate the help Doug a lot! Love the bike and pains me that is making this sound. Makes me nervous

As it should. There is definitely something not right. If you can I'd pick up a pair of NGK SB05E plug caps today so you can take them to Doug's that way they can be swapped out if needed.

Just went back and listened to the noise. That, plus the rich smell, suggests it's ain't firing on the right. Might a combo of badly adjusted valves and bad plug cap. Double whammy.

Can you adjust your own valves? Do you have the tools and the know how? It's not difficult. I think there is a thread on it somewhere. I did one and its up on Guzzitech still I think. As for the plug cap? If it's arcing you really don't want to ride it 60 miles as it'll damage the cat.

If you remove the badge on top of the plug lead cover and then the cover, (3mm Allen key.) you'll be able to see the tops of the plug caps. Start the engine and look and listen for the spark snapping to earth on the rocker cover, it's usually clearly visible. If there is arcing remove the cap by either prying it up from the front of the head by slipping a screwdriver in above the exhaust pipe and metering it up or hooking a cable tie under the right angle and pulling it off CAREFULLY. You can then effect a temporary repair by smearing the damaged area with silicone seal and and wrapping it in insulating tape. It's ugly and messy but it'll work as a temporary fix.

Hey Grade,

FWIW, a while back when I had around 2k on my 2012 8V (non roller) , I took it out and during the course of a ride about 45min in, I started hearing a god awful racket coming from the right side. It concerned me enough to pull it right over. I called the dealer and let it cool down. The sound you describe reminds me of what I heard. It acted up intermittently on the way home after the bike was hot again and around the 3200-4300rpm range. It did occur more when the engine was hot and when accelerating. Above the 4300rpm it would calm down and I could not hear it. If my memory serves me, I think it was the valves that needed adjusting. It was a while ago and I'm pretty sure that is what my dealer indicated after I took it in.  I never heard it again after that......

Hope it is nothing too serious for you either. It's an awesome bike despite it's character flaws. Well, probably not a flaw. Would like to think my bike was set up properly to begin with but....hmmmm. Definitely want to get into the maintenance of the bike myself asap.

Here's the valve adjust for a 8V Stelvio from a shitty site that loses content and pics quite often (but this is a good post): [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Pete's comment about some schmuck at the shop not rotating the crank to find TDC for your right side valves makes sense. Bottom line: if you want valve adjustments done right, do them yourself. They're easy once you figure it out, and fun. It just requires some thinking about how your engine works -- and for the first time, maybe another set of experienced eyes.

And new spark plug boots can't hurt, are cheap, and are easy. You can find those boots at a well-stocked motorcycle shop, or on Amazon. The stock ones are a well known weak point that can shit the bed at some unpleasant point, so it's worth replacing them now.
