GRiSO 1100 Dyno - Agostini + BMC Air Filter Empty
PostSubject: GRiSO 1100 Dyno - Agostini + BMC Air Filter   GRiSO 1100 Dyno - Agostini + BMC Air Filter Icon_minitime1Sun Oct 11, 2015 1:09 pm

Hello everyone, I'm back, at least for now...

I just got my dyno results for my 2007 GRiSO 1100. The best HP made was 78.7. If that's accurate, it's not too bad. The only performance mods done were from the Agnostini slip-on and the BMC air filter. I should have dyno'd it before any mods to get a true baseline. I noticed that exhaust has some serious popping on the decel when on the dyno. Hopefully, with your help, I'll be able to remap and stop most of the popping. There is some moisture that came out of the exhaust during the test but I'm attributing that to the rain that day.

If you are interested in seeing the dyno, here is the link:

It's hard for me to enjoy watching my bike get ravaged on the dyno but it needed to be done. Once I get a better map, I'll have it put back on the dyno to see if there is an actual improvement.

I took the GRiSO out for a few hundred mile ride yesterday in 65 degree Fahrenheit weather and it ran strong and predictable. Popping was present on the decel as expected. I can live with it but it would be nice to tamp it down some. If I let it idle and rev engine, eventually I'll get a service light until I start riding again.

Ok, talk to you guys later...

That's about where I'd expect it to be. It'll be much nicer if you turf the useless rock strainer and put an air filter in it.

So I'm guessing you don't like the BMC filters? I've read some good reviews before buying it. What do you suggest I put in it instead?

Be careful stoked-on-spokes, he may suggest a tampon!

The thing is there is no 'Performance' gain to be had by any aftermarket filter. A 130RWHP V4 Tuono can breathe more than adequately through a smaller paper filter what makes one think that a 76RWHP GRiSO is going to benefit from a rock strainer.

As has been explained before many times the factory mapping is very ordinary but even they know that the commonest modification made by 'Joe Average' is going to be to fling some sort of aftermarket pipe on, usually to make the bike louder. In doing so, especially with the 2 Valver, you will end up making it run leaner in open loop. As a 'Defence' against such silliness the factory maps are all ridiculously rich up top. Rich enough to prevent detonation and melt-down when a pipe and/or silly filter is put on.

The end result is that by putting on a loud pipe and rock strainer you may gain a tiny amount, (In your case less than 3 RWHP.) at the top end but it really WON'T help the overall performance of the engine and will lead to all sorts of unpleasant side effects like the popping on the over-run, midrange performance drop-offs and poorer performance in the closed loop area of the map.

As an additional benefit you will experience greatly accelerated engine wear and worse fuel economy!

Stick with the original filter, it's a GOOD thing. Then actually address the problems of the poorly built, 'One size fits all' factory map.

Mark has a single 1100 map he's built and it's better than the factory one and I know that Charlie has played around with aspects of this and made it work very well with his bike.

The thing is, as we constantly repeat, there is no 'Magic Bullet' that is going to make any individual bike run perfectly. What there are though are a host of ineffective offerings of snake oil that will do little but relieve your wallet of hard earned cash. Shitty air filters are one of the prime examples of such antediluvian fuquetardery.

Stick with the paper filter. If the Tuono inhales, so shall the GRiSO... It breathes AND filters.

I'll take your advice; however, maybe looks are deceiving because the BMC filter looks legit and is warranted for the lifetime of the bike (maybe shorter because of it). I'm guessing you guys have seen this filter before and have had negative results? According to their hype, "BMC filters offer higher flow than O.E. paper element filters thanks to their captured cotton gauze media. Filter comes pre-oiled and ready to install. Made in Italy, BMC's cotton gauze design is tuned to minimize the loss of air flow pressure through the filter, while offering superior filtration to the stock unit."

Anyhow, I do like how it seats perfectly and plugs right in, nice and tight.

I'll see if I can find my stock filter this weekend. I guess cotton gauze isn't the way to go.
You guys scare me...
