a Tenni, now from the west Empty
PostSubject: a Tenni, now from the west   a Tenni, now from the west Icon_minitime1Sat Jan 10, 2015 6:25 am

Gday all.

Bit sad not actually having the GRiSO in the shed while I write this but its at the doctors (Thunderbikes).

Serve me right. Bought earlier in 2014 with heart not head  from over east  (if you aren't from Aust - looking at the map thats anywhere to right of Western Australian border. In this case it was Melbourne. I was from NSW originally and have been through Bungendore quite a few times as a lad….)

Anyway

Shipped it across. Happy days followed. Absolute joy for a bunch of months then got a little rattly on left side. Had been reading up on the cam follower drama's in the meantime so was a little sensitive to it. On Mario's advice parked it and now waiting patiently for the necessary bits.

The bike:  2010 Tenni. History and pictures of it from previous owner are out there. (http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?234933-GRiSO-1200-8v-SE). Will get some of my own soon for you. In fantastic shape still though had to temper it down a little to get past inspection here in WA (it had the original pipe, not the Ago in the PO photos. Had to find some original tail bits to replace the fender eliminator and fitted original mirrors instead of the bar ends). So I suppose except for the really nice shortened seat which was fitted (see the PO info) its now stock.

I'll get it back one day soon and all will be well. In meantime I'm back on the black and gold Duc (84 bevel twin 900S2). Its a bit unreliable grumpy as you might guess but with the help of Andy at eurocycles its running OK for now and not a bad place to be in the scheme of things. A 92 750ss Duc is also under a cover at back of shed - looks and sounds great but needing a few hours of tlc to be usable.   And then there's the FJ40 which is in a million bits but thats another story.

Back to the GRiSO - I see there is plenty of playing on the mapping side of things to be done. Seems to go fantastic for me as is (but I am used to older Duc's so suppose am easily pleased) but will gladly make use of the the work/advice to tweak it. Will take advice on whats suitable for the 2010 if anybody has any ?

Tks for having me !

Who did it belong to? I might be able to give you a bit of history? PM me the name if you like. I can't actually remember too many green SE's? Only about five I think.

Welcome!

I'm not surprised you had to de-modify it! That fender eliminator surely ain't legal anywhere in Oz? I didn't like that seat either!

Pete, the bike was owned by Aaron Field. He tried to get the 68S map installed.

Conor, if it still had the 68S map, then I'm not surprised you weren't unhappy. That was the best map to come out of the factory.

Ah, in that case I don't think I did see it. I met Aaron once at the Vic rally but I think that a bloke who spends a lot of his time trying to prove I don't know what I'm talking about and probably thinks he's a big noise in Vic got in his ear. I don't think it ever came up here and if it didn't I wouldn't of put the 68S map in it.

I know this bike as I nearly bought it, even taking in to account the stuffed tappets the price was good but it went a few hours before I was going make an offer.
Bike had just had a big service by a Melbourne dealer which cost Aaron about $2k and which included new swingarm and steering head bearings among other service items.
Unfortunately the dealer wouldn't chase up a warranty enquiry for the shagged tappets because it didn't have all of the services marked by a dealer, so Aaron in frustration traded it on a BMW GS.
I should add he is happy as a pig in mud with the GS.
Apart from the obvious tappet issue it should otherwise be in good nick.

Thanks Guys

As I said I don't have the bike with me to stare at right now (which is saving me heaps on speeding fines I suppose..think positive, think positive....) , but have a couple of photos I prepared earlier...

This one while I was sitting under a lean-to shelter near an old mill out in York, east of Perth feeling arty and bored while a storm passed . I promise the rest of the bike was there. The offending rattly pot is the one in the photo. Grrr.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

A rough photo. The new (shortened) seat that looked a really light tan colour when first made (from the original owner's photos) now looks darker which I think is better. Each to their own.  I assume its maybe a little lower than stock, which actually works against me given I'm in the 6'3" range. Might have to steal some feathers off one of the chooks to build it up a bit.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Have a small tailbag from cortech that does a great job for my rubbish. Have also bought one of the flexible fuel bladder things as some of the trips here in WA are a bit long and the G's tank is a bit short...200k's seems to be about it  - I assume thats about right for most (?)

Small thing that's bitten me (as opposed to the big thing thats bitten me) is the sidestand. Not sure if its a common problem but damn thing rattled loose and ended up hanging on one bolt with bike near horizontal one morning. Yikes. Loctite.

The other / current other ride while I am waiting (not sure I'm allowed to post here but you now, its still italian, a twin and appropriately noisy, so forgive me)

Mark: Yes thats the problem I'm dealing with now. I suppose when you want something bad enough you just jump regardles sof the croc's ! We'll see how Mandello help out. Its in good hands with Mario at Thunderbikes so I'll sort it one way or the other.

Connor,
Once it is sorted you will be able to add at least another 50km to your fuel range unless you ride everywhere at 200km/h.

Welcome Conor, I've never met Mario at Thunderbikes he has always been very good for odd/unusual parts and accessories, and his service on-line is second to none.  Good luck with the warranty claim.

Oh well. Warranty claim fell over. Will have to sell one of the kids to get the roller kit sorted. They are voting on it now.

Upside is I can just get on with the job of fixing her.

Have  a 4 day multi thousand km rde around the south west of WA in March and doing it the old Duc might just hurt a bit. Would have to invest in a whole sheep on the saddle not just a sheepskin. That said fitted new throttle set and some other electrickerry bits (from Steve at Bevel Heaven) today and she is all good again so you never know. But with luck the tenni will be back in time...

Its back ! Roller headworks on and a few $k less in the pocket but should be good for a while now.

Only drama is its now hunting like hell at anything below 3k rpm and is really unpleasant to ride through traffic. I assume the fuel map loaded up as part of the fix is the culprit. Certainly wasn't like that before. Reading the archives I gather I just need guzzidiag, cables and some beetle magic to get it sorted.

All stock everything except the rollers - what map would you suggest Mark ?

Weird. AFAIK they don't change the map for the GRiSO. You running the Ago or the stock pipe? If they had the battery out (or somesuch, but why?), it may be the trims have reset and you'll need to ride it a bit to get it back to where it was. Alternatively, if it did have the 68S map and they installed the 03 map, then that may explain it. 68S map good, 03 map, not so much.

Tks Mark . Its a stock pipe though the photos from previous owner show it had an Ago on it at some point - so not sure what map that would have had and what that may dine if left on when stock refitted(?). Time has reset on dash so I guess battery must have been out. I'll check again with Mario - he wasn't able to tell me exactly which one had been loaded up. I'll have to fix it - sensation is like an old bicycle with a bent rim catching on brakes...

For anybody in WA/Perth area who is leery of flashing a map themselves Jude and I are going to be over there visiting my daughter who's starting her PhD at UWA next month, I can bring cables and laptop easily enough and will happily flash you a map in exchange for beer/food/advice on what to see and where to go!Very Happy

Bloody hell - there's an offer. I'll still grab the cables etc but would be great to grab a few minutes it you have them. Beers can be found to assist the process.

(I know its your daughter but maybe you can sort an honorary gong as well. Dr Pete has a ring to it. )

When do you think you'll be here ? I've got some trips away on the books but hopefully can be around. Maybe Rory can come on up from the south  as well.

Got cables, got programs, got map from beetle, loaded up no problems (yes yes, including the resets) and magic happened ! Only a shortish ride through local hills but now fully settled through range, no hunting. Happy days !

Have a long ride doing up through south west to really get a feel for it (and to see if I can get past the 200km mark without seeing the dreaded fuel light)

Apologies for poor photo but for those interested in broken bits, here's one pair of my followers, now replaced by rollers. The noise was really obvious on left but both were on their way. It shouldn't have stayed in there as long as it had, but certainly caught it before doing significant further damage. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

For interest the job was just under 2.5k (AUD)
