PostSubject: Rocker covers and rollerisation.   Rocker covers and rollerisation. Icon_minitime1Wed Jan 27, 2016 3:46 pm

Repeat post from the classifieds section so if it seems a bit weird it's because it's a simple C&P

As Mark has said there is an insane discrepancy between the price of the old 'Non Floating' rocker covers and the new 'Floating' type. Why? FIIK! It is one thing that is worth considering though if you are planning on rollerising your flat tappet engine pre-emptively on your own dime.

Everything north of the head itself is different for the two rocker covers due to the length and fitment of the two spark plug 'Tubes'. On the earlier engines there is a long tube that passes through the cambox and seals in the rocker cover with an o-ring. On the later type there is still a tube but it is much shorter and only goes between the head and the bottom of the cambox/rocker carrier assembly. It is still sealed both ends with o-rings, in the cambox there is a groove machined in the bottom of the spark plug tunnel for the ring and the top of the cambox is sealed to the rocker cover with a circular neoprene gasket similar to the main rocker cover gasket. The advantage of this system is that the tube, and therefore the o-rings, aren't disturbed in normal servicing and therefore are less likely to leak.

If you are rollerising on your own dime there is a lot to be said for paying the extra 'One off' hit and buying an 'A' kit rather than a 'B' or 'C' kit and throwing in a pair of 'Short' plug tubes and the new, cheaper, rocker covers, (Plus, in the case of an engine needing a 'C' kit, the shims, seals, gaskets etc. missing from the 'A' kit.). If you go down that route you get the benefit of being able to cheaply purchase new rocker covers if the unthinkable happens.

Just a thought......

It make sense, Pete.

I reckon the "non-floating" rocker cover will be more difficult to source in the future. In another words, even more expensive than now.

I bought "B" kit for my 2009 SE, guess I have to stock up some "non-floating" rocker cover when they are still readily available.

Since I ruined my cover on my 2013 during the crash, I replaced it with one from AF1 Racing and it cost me $43. Peanuts!
They list the early one at over $200 so yeah, grow err I mean get a pair folks! Laughing

I fitted a set of Stucci crash bars to the 09 when it was new, None on the 15 Rosso and I must admit, the crash bars "Ugly Up" the bike a bit.   And they cost money, cheaper to just buy a couple of spare rocker covers Thumbs Up

Keep in mind guys that if your bike takes a good tumble not a parking lot dump, the top of the head thins will eventually get shaved as well...
So I wouldn't dish out the idea of engine guards.

My small incident resulted in a holed rocker cover. I rode the GRiSO home spewing oil.
I installed a pair of Stucchi bars to hopefully avoid this type of inconvenience, if I were to have a small spill far from home & service. Two extra covers would be less expensive than the cost of the guards but I don't think I want to pack them in my kit.

The problem I have with most, if not all, of the 'Crash Bars' is that they simply move the point where stress is applied. In most cases the forward mounts are the same bolts as mount the engine in the frame. In the event of a crash at anything much above walking pace I worry about cracking the cases as was so often the result of similar small 'Oopsie's' on V11's. You could write one of them off just by having it roll off the stand!

I guess it's all a crap shoot. I keep full collision and hope I don't need it!

When I bought my 1100 used she was leaking from the right valve cover.
Since I went down on the right it got worse.
Time to ugly it up.
But I don't want to ruin my cases. Bugger

Try the Valpolinni gaskets first. If that doesn't work take the cover off and true it's mating surface up by moving it around on a sheet of 1200 wet & dry on a piece of plate glass in a figure of eight pattern.

Most likely though it will simply be the early type rocker cover gasket giving up the ghost. It didn't happen on all of 'em but it's been a consistent niggling nuisance on some. The Valpolinni gaskets usually fix it once and for all.

Trouble is there is a fairly significant price difference between the A kit and the B kit (about 250 Euro).

Errr? Steve? If you have an 1100 why would you need a top end kit?

Thanks for this Pete... I had a low side crash on the GRiSO on a ride/track day and scraped the crap out of my 08's valve cover on one side. Need to arrange roller kit and give her a tidy up - have 13,000 kms and want to get it done sooner rather than later. Just have to sell a few guitars to fund as no service history that I could ascertain (wasn't aware of issues when purchased as bike was listed a 1100 and when I turned up it was a 8v).

Cheers Taz.

Any service records at all? Where was it purchased from? Private sale or dealer?

I'll PM you this evening/tonight.
