Aftermarket LED turn signal install Empty
PostSubject: Aftermarket LED turn signal install   Aftermarket LED turn signal install Icon_minitime1Fri Aug 28, 2015 4:10 pm

I am trying to replace my OEM turn signals with new ones while I'm in the process of putting a tail tidy

on my 2012 GRiSO. My new turn signals have three wires, red, black, and green. The GRiSO has two wires, dark blue

and light blue, and they are connected to a plastic lead. First off, which wires go with which, and what does one do

with the odd man out? Secondly. is it OK to cut off the plastic lead from the old signals a couple of inches down, and

just splice the wires together and then wrap them? Lastly, my new illuminated plate holder has two wires, black and white.

The plate also functions as a signal light, but not a brake light. How do I connect the black and white wires

to the yellow and blue of the Grisos license plate illuminator ? I'm sure this is a question right out of the first edition of

''Electronics for Dummies', but I don't want to move forward til I'm sure.

The dark blue wire on the original blinkies and license plate light is ground.

I'm guessing the new blinkies have running lights built in. Surely they came with some sort of literature telling you which is the running light wire and which is the blinker wire?

Unfortunately, no. They were an Ebay purchase from Taiwan, and although they look well made, no instructions

were included. I contacted the vendor but haven't heard back yet.

Set them up with some Dummy wires to test them. You can't hurt an LED lamp hooking it up the wrong way, it just won't illuminate. It can be a guessing game with wiring from Taiwan and china, start with Red for positive and touch the green and black to earth, don't be surprised if it turns out that black is positive though. Any 12V dc supply will do, pop open your car bonnet and use the car battery Wink

Thanks for the help, waterbottle and beetle. I did end up doing a dummy run of wiring for the lights,
and it went as expected; on the GRiSO dark blue/negative light blue/positive. The LEDs were red/pos, black/neg and green/ground. The project itself took way longer to complete than I had thought
it would, but after jerryrigging a new template for the plate holder and an adapter for the front signal
mounts, it all turned out pretty well. Still some cleaning up to do to hide the handiwork, but
basically ready to hit the streets.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Looks really great! Where did you get those blinkers?

Thanks, bioman. I got them here:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The came on a slow boat from China (literally) but I have to say they didn't disappoint once they got here. They're serious little pieces of hardware! Cast aluminium, and they have some heft to them. Really solid. I dig 'em, but if you're worried about every extra ounce on your bike, you might want to look
elsewhere. Nice blinkers though....[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Y[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Just an observation, and I agree they look good - but the shape of the surround of the indicators look like it decreases the visibility of the light being viewed from the side. Possibly not an issue at night because they probably throw plenty of light being LED, but during the day?  Something to be mindful of.

Valid observation, Tassiedevil 71. These lights are much more forward/backward focused than the OEMs.
I'm hoping the increased intensity and vis of the LEDs will in part make up for that, but point taken.
But as my great grandpapy always said, "style over substance, my boy, style over substance. It'll get
you laid every time". He was a wise old man, my grandpapy.

Don't want to rain on your parade guys but what is wrong with the original ones?
They're not ugly at all IMO and they get the job done, no?

I also want to change the OEM turn signals for smaller led signals. Does the dash recognize and adjust the frequency or do I need to add resistors?

That depends on the indicators I believe.

Yeah, well I just wondered if the electronics would adjust to different load, as there are blinker relays that do just that. I bought one with the blinkers before I found out there was no such item in my GRiSO! According to the manual that came with the indicators, I have to install a 25 ohm resistor. My learning curve is consistently steep....
