Oil Leak on Cylinder Head? Empty
PostSubject: Oil Leak on Cylinder Head?   Oil Leak on Cylinder Head? Icon_minitime1Sun Aug 14, 2016 6:45 am

I noticed a little oil leaking from my left cylinder head (when sitting on the bike) yesterday and could use some advice/help.  Here is the back story....
2013 8vSE with just a bit over 3,000 miles (4828km) It had 400 miles on it when I bought it from Jim up here at Rose Farm Classics in Illinois back in March. No issues with the bike thus far and love it ever day.
Here's the deal....
Riding home from work last Friday in the usual stop n' go rush hour traffic; the ambient temperature was about 93F (33.8C) and the bike was running as normal.  At one of the stops, I smell something like burnt oil but at the time didn't know if it was coming from my bike or the old junker car that was in front of me.  I get home and when the bike has cooled down I go out and to inspect and notice that there is a drip or two of oil on the lower cylinder cooling fins (not sure what the official name of those things are).  I took off the left side fairing and it looks like the oil was maybe coming from the oil line that feeds into the cylinder head?  I did try to tighten the oil like bolt and it moved maybe a millimeter...not sure if that would be enough to make a difference.  I took some photos and hope someone has some advice.  The oil level is still okay so I don't think it is a major leak but I am scared to ride it without really knowing what's going on.  Would/could something like this happen if it was getting to hot or was it just that bolt that got a little loose that caused the problem?  Any thoughts would be much appreciated here!

Here is a link to my google drive with the pictures I took and some comments as I could not seem to upload them here...

Perhaps replace the copper crush washers? A frequent fault on old Guzzis was the oil feed pipes and the banjo connecters and washers. Soaked and destroyed a pair of boots once.

Thanks Papa Lazarou...I finally was able to take it out for a little ride today and no leak. Very Happy I'm hoping that snugging up that crush-washer did the trick but we'll see once I have to ride it in hot rush-hour stop n' go traffic.  Worst case scenario...if I have to replace the crush washers, is it a royal pain?  I'm guessing I have to remove the tank to do so...do I need to worry about excessive oil draining from the line?  Any specific crush washer I need or are they pretty generic?  Thanks in advance for the tips.

If it doesn't leak? Job done. Biggest pain in getting the tank off is separating the 'Quick release' coupling on the pipe. No, fuel won't flood out. For ease of removal though get the tank as empty as possible.

Unless the tank outlet's plastic elbow snaps off causing an immediate deluge... and the tank has been filled to brim... and you have an exposed radiant-bar heater just above the bike in a freezing cold garage...

How do I know that... hmmmm.

As Pete adds, it's a good idea to empty the tank before starting to remove it.
With tank off it is easy to check/tighten oil line tightness.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Rode today to work (about 13 miles) and when I came out to go home, no oil. :-) I'd like to learn how to do some of the more basic fixes on the bike when the time comes so I appreciate the tips. As an aside, where does everyone purchase small random items for the GRiSO? Only having a Honda before this it was easy, go to the Honda site, find your part # and order away...I haven't found such a place yet for the MG...are parts that difficult to source?

In the US? MG Cycles and AF1 are the usual go-to's. Moto International have a good stock too.

You're not that far from MG Cycles in WI.
I drove there from Chicago 2 years ago to pick-up some parts, its about 80mls as I recollect.
Nice friendly Grizzled Guzzi Guys, in the middle of nowhere.......
