| Hi I don't own a GRiSO, but have a Guzzi Daytona RS! Have just run into flat tappet problems and in the process of ordering new cams, lifters, valves and valve guides. Came across this site due to the flat tappet issues! Had a look at a GRiSO over at the Nabiac National Motorcycle Museum swap meet day in July.
Cheers, James | |

| That's odd? The old Hi-cams don't usually do their tappets. I'd ensure you find the cause.

| Have found several reports which some say is from soft tappets and some blame oil pump wear then pressure loss. Talked to a bike shop that I'm starting to trust and they tell me they had a Centauro that had similar issues! I'm replacing the oil pump, cams, lifters, valve guides and valves. I haven't owned the bike for very long but have the old service job cards, most of their work that I have checked has had issues! James hello. Yes, this is a problem known as the Centauro. The engine is very similar to Daytona. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] | |

| My first-ever Guzzi was a Daytona RS. Neat bike, but not a good fit for me physically. I managed, but just not good for day-long stints (I'm a short arse). What that Daytona had in spades though was strong acceleration in the upper reaches of the RPM band (my particular example had a Raceco UK full exhaust and a few other goodies, so it felt a good bit faster than stock. Shite fueling over the bottom half of the rev band though, in the days before the internet and Beetle).
Worth mentioning is that on a number of occassions while accelerating hard I had noted that the oil pressure warning light would illuminate, and would stay illuminated for several seconds, even after I chopped the throttle and clutched it. I assumed that there was an inadequate level of oil at the pressure pump pickup point, but the oil level always checked up to spec. I sold the bike before i got to the bottom of it, but not too long ago I did come across something on the net mentioning (as I recall) that this is a known issue on the Daytona RS, and indeed in stock form the pump pickup can loose its feed (oil starvation) under hard acceleration. So if you see that light, you'd better take heed! There is apparently a fix available:
gutsibits oil baffle/windage plate
Look at the 4th item down from the top.
Something to look out for obviously, and I wonder if that design flaw might not have had something to do with your tappet issue.
Good luck with your Daytona!

| Just so you know the 'Gutsibits' windage plate is in fact a plagiarised, direct, unacknowledged, theft of my design of plate that I put a lot of time and effort into designing and manufacturing. I do heartily resent that they are a.) Selling a doppelgänger without so much as a by your leave and b.) taking credit for the design. Before saying "Well, they must of just come up with a similar solution." I can assure you they didn't. It is an exact copy, even down to the thickness of the material which I chose simply because it was the thickness of some off-cut material from another job at the place where I get them cut. They refuse to discuss it with anybody who questions them. They are basically thieves. End of story. The one thing that gives me great joy is that every morning they have to wake up and look at Hudersfield! If you want the full story of the plate's history and development it is on the V11lemans.com website. Fuck them! And the horse they rode in on! Pete PS. The tappet issue has absolutely nothing to do with the oil pick up exposure suffered by 'Broad Sump' engines. Looking at the original post again the bike is a Daytona 1000 I believe? These don't use the broad sump and retained the sump-bottom pick up which is not prone to exposure. Also since the cam lobes and tappets are splash fed from an oil bath pressure drop won't be the issue. Any pressure failure will lead to big end damage long before cam and tappet wear would occur. In a situation like this I'd be suspecting either Spring poundage, lubricant choice or tappet material. A real bummer as early Hi-Cam bits are getting harder to find. Whoops! Sorry, it is an RS so it is a broad sump design. While not relevant to this failure I would recommend a plate. | |

| Jumpin' Jehosaphat, Pete! My apologies for linking to these scoundrels.
Am I to understand that you either have these plates in stock or would manufacture on request? (to answer a question the OP might have).
Cheers,

| Nah, s'alright. I'm over it, I just like people to know. Nowadays I batch manufacture them when there are enough orders. I recently did a run for one of the V11 mob, I might even have one left but I'm not sure. Here's a pic of one of the 'Originals'. Note my company logo is lazer etched on it. Now compare it to the doppel and tell me it isn't a direct copy? Bastards. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Thing is, if they'd just asked me I would of said give $10 from every sale to Medicienes sans Frontiers and it would all of been sweet. They didn't ask, they just stole, so even if they offered to do it I wouldn't trust them to do it further than I can spit. Pete | |

| James, woes aside, but I think you need to simply give me the Daytona RS and I will sort all the problems. I can pick it up next weekend, does that work? | |

| ronbo 10 "Shite fueling over the bottom half of the rev band though" Absolutely horrible and mine had a ultimap chip and had been dyno'd with the chip, constant throttle and through towns was difficult, would also randomly miss every 30seconds to 10minutes! Now have Jefferies ecu and problems solved!
Pete Roper " lubricant choice" when I first purchased the bike I rang the useless f***s that had stolen money pretending to service this bike and asked questions regarding gearbox, final drive and engine oil, was told they just use the same gear oil in the gearbox and final drive (no molly) and whatever in the engine! "or tappet material" seems to be a bit of history of soft tappets in these!
I have looked at those sump plates and thought you had given up building them due to getting ripped off! Do you have one that would fit my Daytona RS? May as well put one in whilst it is apart!
OZ1200Guzzi "I can pick it up next weekend, does that work? Tony you are better off waiting a bit until the new cams, lifters, valves, guides, oil pump etc go in! May not have to push it then!
Cheers, James

Cheers, James Good evening, as I believe it is near midnight in Oz. Be that as it may, I have the honor to represent Mr. Roper's commercial interests in the United Sates. After reviewing your post, I have contacted the Marsdens Law Group -- [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] -- to have one of their litigation specialists discuss with you or your counsel your apparent intention to infringe upon Mr. Roper's intellectual-property rights in the world-famous "Roper Plate." In the meantime, you might think about transferring all of your significant real- and personal-property holdings into your wife's name! Best regards, Bill Hagan, Esq.

No harm, no foul.... Apologies if any offense ... thought the grinning emos below my name made it clear enough. If not ... I WAS JOKING! But, "Guilty, Your Honor," to the charge of "similar warped sense of humor." Regards to all, Bill

Bill and Kathi have had an open invite from us since 2004. One day we'll convince the recalcitrant old prick and his lovely missus to visit but right at the moment they have 'Mum' issues and a host of grand-kids, (Sod their bleeding eyes! We don't have one! Bloody Catholics!) but at some point, before he gets too old, we'll get them over and they can be truly horrified by how awful us Antipodeans actually are! Pete
