Longevity of the 8V? Empty
PostSubject: Longevity of the 8V?   Longevity of the 8V? Icon_minitime1Sun Feb 12, 2017 4:52 pm

Well I'm currently undertaking a 100,000Km inspect and overhaul of Michael Wynd's bike. He posts here sometimes as 'Wyno'. Anyway I sold him the bike in 2012, it was the first Roller top end bike I sold. Now its his only transport and gets used very well and hard. Since he moved from Canberra to Geelong in Victoria its been serviced elsewhere and maybe not as knowledgeably as it might of been but it hasn't had anything horrendous or stupid done to it and the only real mod is a map from our regular 'Snake Oil Salesman'.

So what's it like at 100,000Km?

Well, pretty damn good. On the chassis front the steering head bearings needed repacking but not replacing, we haven't yanked the swingarm yet and can't remember if they were greased early on but assume they were but they may need replacing along with the shock linkage bearings. Shock has never been rebuilt but its a moot point as the bike is getting the full Matris kit front and rear. Fork seals blew at about 80-90,000 and the forks were rebuilt for the first time then. Wheels are still good and leak free worst thing is the front rotors which are being replaced by lightweight RSV4 rotors. Front wheel bearings are being replaced on principle!

Engine? Well, you remember that Stelvio I'd had in a couple of years ago that had had a couple of 'Fat Duc's fitted so it destroyed its cam chains and wore its rings out like so?

Well, here's a pic of a top ring out of Michael's 100,000Km bike that hasn't been abused with any stupid widgets.

I think the lesson here is pretty bloody obvious!

I was going to do the cam chains but seeing what the rings are like I don't think I'll bother. Why add expense when its not likely to be needed? Anyway, they're easy enough to do if and when it rattles.

One interesting wear point was the 'Hemispherical Pads' that go into the rockers to compensate and allow for the arc movement of the rocker in relation to the tappet tower.

Its a bit hard to see but there is probably about 8 to ten thou of wear on the worst one. No wear discernible on the tappet tower. These things aren't expensive. I'll throw a set in on principle!

Its a very hard engine to kill! It took the factory to work out how to do that!  scratch

Wonderful news Pete. I am amazed that I haven't damaged it irreparably. Thanks for the photos. I had a new headlight shell sent over from AF1. If I send it with the brake pedal would you be able to fit them too, please? I can't remember if I told you that the headlight only works on high beam, and the engine won't start except in neutral.

Just throwing out a general question. While the 1200 is apparently very robust, do many experience oil leaks? Not big arsed leaks just the continuous residue left on the motor following a ride!

I just cant seem to stop mine from dropping small amounts on the engine and frame. I replaced all the o rings carefully cleaning the reassembly, but no luck. Every time I go for a ride I get a small amount of oil residue spraying on the bike from (I believe) the upper part of the heads. The latest weep appears to be again from the small opening near the plug tube.
What I would like to know is this a common experience for most or am I just 'lucky'?

You're just lucky. Even my old shitters don't leak. It might be a porous casting. Drop up some time and we can dig in and have a squizz.

Not in the next couple of weeks. I'm off to NZ for two weeks come Saturday.

Make sure the tubes on the back sides (knees) are secure and next time you have the tank up check the condom on the breather box by the head tube, clutch side. (Don't know what else to call it)

Good to see th reliability past 100k!
