SET button not working

While I was repairing the leaky oil breather hose I must had pulled my SET button connection loose somewhere because it stopped working on the same day. Can someone tell me where the connector lies so I can save myself a lot of random looking?

I did read the post about the switch dying. I presume it's just a simple normally-open push switch. If that's the case couldn't I just replace it with a waterproof equivalent?

When you say SET button, are you referring to the menu toggle on the front of the left grip switchgear?

yes you can replace the switch, just needs soldering in, i bought a whole bunch until i found one that worked!

I chased this issue on a Norge once, and it turned out to be a dicky connection at the dashboard plug.  Inserting it in and out a few times was enough to fix it.  A lot easier to check first, too.

It's a white multi- pin connector under left side cover near ignition coil

That's where I was messing around with the oil leak repair. I believe I may have disconnected it to get at the tubes so maybe I didn't completely seat it on the reconnect.

OK, checked the connector and it was tight. I put an meter across the all combinations of the three leads on the switch side and pressing the button, never closed the circuit. Safe to assume my switch crapped out or should I check a different way? It it possible to open it up w/o destroying the internals?

yes you can take them apart and solder in a new switch, they are only a couple of $$/££ online. If you unscrew the switch from the handlebar then you can prise off the black plastic cover from the back, you will find that it is sealed/waterproofed in place but with a bit of patience with a sharp knife you can get the old one out. It has six prongs but only uses two, just like the replacements.

Can you suggest a particular switch and where to find it? I took a quick look online and there are thousands...

I bought so many trying to find something to fit, that i cannot find the original purchase now, but these look like the ones.

Well it appears some combination of wire giggling and prayerful incantations has re-energized the stitch. Seems to be working fine now but I'll pick up a couple replacements should it decide to punish me again.

Soldering is an art form that is akin to oxy welding aluminium (note correct spelling here - now ducks for cover).

I have been doing it for 45 years and still make it look like a seagull shat on it sometimes - poor eyesight does not help, nor does fumble fingers - growing old sucks, big time!

The one and only time I tried to MIG-weld something was to mend a broken luggage rack years ago. The wire I used was too thin for the feed jet and I managed to create a blob with multiple spikes that had a strong resemblance to a porcupine! But it did the job

There must have been a reason they did this.  Perhaps they know something the rest of the world is ignorant to.

The SET button stopped working yesterday when I was scrolling through menu items. I can still reset the odometer in mode 1 or mode 2 but the quick press to toggle from trip odometer to mileage to trip time, etc. does not work. Does anyone have suggestions for troubleshooting or is a new switch replacement the only solution?

Looking at the wiring diagram, the Trip1, Trip2 & Mode positions all share the same brown wire from pin 18 of the instrument panel. Since the first two work, it's unlikely to be a connection issue here.

This shifts the suspicion to the Mode connection from the LH switch to pin 8 of the instrument panel via initially a pink/yellow cable, and then a yellow/grey cable. I suggest you trace this through, especially the junction of the two wires.

Of course it could always be a faulty LH switch or the instrument panel, but I would check this path first.

I suspect mine is US as well, sometimes it takes ages to get it to register.
I was thinking about wiring in a reed switch, they have hermetically sealed contacts.
The switch can be activated with a small magnet through the Aluminium or Plastic.

Before I got a chance to troubleshoot my switch, I went for a ride and lo and behold, it is working again. I’ll probably leave well enough alone before I check the connectors. Or the impending 3-5 days if snow may force me into the shop doing something GRiSO related so I don’t lose my mind. I am SO done with winter...
