PostSubject: Flat battery   Flat battery Icon_minitime1Fri Apr 14, 2017 7:49 am

I finish work Thursday evening for the Easter weekend.
Arrived home to find the wife was still at work so grabbed the opportunity to get the bike out ( 6 months old 1000 miles).
Wheel it out from the garage and go to get bike gear.
Sit on bike put key in and hit the starter.
The first odd thing i noticed was as soon as I removed my thumb from the start button the starter motor stopped cranking.
Second attempt kept the button pressed and the bike just about started but wanting to check everything was ok stopped the engine and tried to start for a third time. This time it failed to start and the dash displayed the triangle and service message.
It has never failed to start before and was out for around 200 miles the previous weekend.
Put the bike on trickle charge for a couple of hours and managed to get it started. I went out for 50+ miles keeping an eye on the battery voltage. This was a between 14.2 and 14.3 volts.
Back home after the ride, stopped the engine and restarted again it failed on the third attempt.
Left it on charge over night, the battery conditioner was reading 100% but same story starting cleanly once, reluctantly second time and failing on the third attempt.

Is there anything obvious i can check before getting a battery drop test?

Give your battery terminals and ground a quick check but it does sound like the battery has expired.

Classic symptoms of a stuffed battery. It'll accept a charge from the alternator or external charger, but won't hold it. Soon it won't even accept a charge full stop and then you're going nowhere. A slightly lazier than normal cranking speed from a cold start is usually the first subtle sign.....can be difficult to pick at times though.

Thanks, bike is only 6 months old. I checked the earth connection, battery terminals etc.
Do Piaggio cover batteries under warranty?

What's the old story about 'Buckleys and none' .....
I am sure Piaggio will send you in the direction of the battery manufacturer
Good luck with it

Just to close this.
My bike is a 2016 Rosso Trophy. I am the first owner and it was purchased in September 2016. The dealer it was purchased from is no longer trading.
When the original dealer lost the MG franchise Piaggio sent a letter out asking me to use a dealer near Peterborough. I gave them a call and was told that it would be 3 weeks before they could do anything. I then called Quarry Bank, very helpful people but to cut a long story short the battery supplied with my bike was not the original as supplied by MG.
My bike had a JMT battery and not the correct Yuasa.
Faith in MG restored but unable to question the supplying dealer over the whereabouts of the Yuasa battery.
Wanting to move on and get out my bike I was unable to find the correct Yuasa part but did manage to buy an Exide AGM. It's just had the acid dropped into the cells so hopefully tomorrow morning a quick charge, fit and ride.

Sorry, didn't mean to be so glib, just couldn't help myself. We all love Moto Guzzi's, but Piaggio isn't especially known for giving a shit about customer satisfaction.

I also had the same issue with my 2016 GRiSO purchased in December. They had a 12 amp hour battery in it and it calls for an 18 amp hour battery. I purchased the new GRiSO from an out of town dealer 140 miles away because there were only two new GRiSO's left in Florida. My battery didn't die, but I did notice when I was at the dealer, when I took it for a test ride, the motor turned over very slowly when I hit the start switch. I just figured that it was from sitting on the showroom floor without charging. When I got it home and removed the seat, the battery was so small that the clamp wouldn't do anything to hold it in place, the battery would just flop around in the battery box (it was an ATV battery). I called them the next day, they requested that I send a photo, which I did. They couldn't explain the wrong battery, but they did UPS ship me a new one, which turned out to be wrong battery and too large to fit in the battery compartment. I ended up going to Batteries Plus and purchasing an AGM battery. For the last ten years, I've always used automatic battery maintainers on all my bikes whenever they sit for more that 3 days without riding. I usually have two or 3 bikes in the stable, and I don't ride every day. So using battery maintainers is a must to preserve the life of the batteries. Once a bike battery drains down once or twice, its done. I've never had a battery issue since I've started doing this and my bikes batteries usually last 6 to 7 years before needing replacing.

In all fairness the JMT battery fitted in mine was the correct specification just the wrong quality.
I also use a battery maintainer on the bike when it is unused for more than a week.
Why do dealers do this?
They loose a customer and gain a stack of negative comments via forums etc.
Is the £50 financial gain worth it?

The final twist this story.
Last weekend I sent an e-mail to MG customer services (in Rome). I had a phone call on Monday to let me know that they were moving the issue to MG UK and would they would keep me informed of the progress. Today, I have had another call from Rome to let me know that MG UK will be replacing the battery and I need to contact Quarry Bank Motorcycles to make arrangements.
I have just spoken with Quarry Bank who confirmed that MG UK have authorised a replacement battery.

If anybody needs a new battery, I have a 2 week old Exide YTX20 CH BS available!

80% of bikes around the world come standard with a YUASA.
These can be manufactured in Japan, Korea or USA and are a little pricey, but the quality is good.
Most bike shops here will not sell Yuasa because Chinese made copies are a lot cheaper, or more importantly, have greater mark up potential.

Therefore, if your new bike has been on the showroom floor for a year or three, the Yuasa will be dead and they will use the cheapest replacement.

Oh, they will sell you a battery tender, but never use one themselves.

While we are talking batteries.
I'm planning a 5K+ round trip when I get home, my original battery is coming up for seven yrs old and tossing the idea around to replace it before I leave, it seems to be still ok….but, murphies law and all that.
Was going to replace with a SSB 12V LH14-BS Lithium, is this ok? and would I need a different charger set up, at the moment just have the run of the mill trickle charger.
Thoughts guys???

Theoretically a basic "trickle charger" should be fine with a Lithium type battery.
Problems arise if you have hi-tech type charger that wants to de-sulphate a normal acid battery with bursts of high voltage (16v) inputs. Goes "BOOM!"

Mr Bob, like Wayne says, a trickle charger is the way to go, though the voltage may be a tad low (13.8 V). I use a DC power supply at 14.2 V an this fully charges the battery. Before you leave on your little jaunt, give her the present of a new battery - these bikes are a right royal bitch to push start in dirt. Since we are catching up, I would rather have a drink with you than push you all over the paddock!

Battery simply starts the beast - the alternator keeps all the electrons happening

Hi Tony, being a slack arse I couldn't be bothered buying a 3rd charger.
When my Lithium gets down to 13V I charge it back up to 13.8V.

As soon as I ride it, alternator punches it up to 14.5V +
