6200 Mile Service: Parts Recommendations Empty
PostSubject: 6200 Mile Service: Parts Recommendations   6200 Mile Service: Parts Recommendations Icon_minitime1Sun Aug 13, 2017 12:00 pm

So after purchasing my GRiSO pre-loved, i found out via some detective work that the 6200 mile service was never completed (currently has 6500 miles on it). Does anyone have recommendations on parts? i.e.-Spark Plug type/brand, engine and tranny oil, oil/fork seals, etc. Also, looks like the tires need to be replaced, as well. It has Metzelers on there now (which i think came stock with the bike), but does anyone have another recommendation? Pirelli or Bridgestones maybe? I have a short commute to work in the city but like to take her out on the canyons north of San Francisco on weekends.

Thanks,

Charlie

Defo Crankcase Oil & Filter; Gear Oil; Final drive (CARC) Oil; valve clearances; TB balance etc Just follow specs in book rather than brands.

For front forks despite they are in the schedule I wouldn't personally unless you want to go the whole hog & do the seals as well; but TBH they won't need doing for some time. Worth thinking about doing fork seals, fork oil & steering bearings all together - I did them at around 20K miles (forks hadn't been touched at all before then)

I wouldn't change spark plugs if they looks ok (when you take them out to do the valves clearance)

Worth thinking about when to check & grease rear swing arm bearings. Bit of a painful job but they come out factory 'variable' and usually not well greased; so sooner you check, the better. I did mine at 20k miles and they were dry and rusty but salvageable.

I'm running Michelin P4 Road GTs & very happy with them in all conditions and roads

Thanks, Paul. Was thinking about having the Suspension done on the bike anyway. Feels a bit stiff (like riding a mechanical bull). Didn't think about the rear swing arm bearings, but will definitely look into that, as well!

Well you're in the clear for rollers then. That's good.

As mentioned the swingarm bearings and shock linkage will need attention other than that just give it a full service/tune. You'll need some sort of manometer and Guzzidiag to do that properly.

Don't be tempted by aftermarket air filters or 'Tuning Widgets'.

Because aftermarket labyrinth filters like K&N's don't filter very well and are completely un-necessary.

As has been pointed out many times before if a 130RWHP Tuono can get enough air through a filter about 2/3rds the surface area of the one the GRiSO uses why would the great wheezing shitbox need anything different to the very efficient at filtering stock filter?

Inefficient labyrinth filters also do nothing to assist the stock mapping and due to the reasons listed above I don't believe Mark can be arsed building any OL maps for engines that are going to wear out prematurely.

I'm sure that if you look around on the web there will be a host of charlatans who will be only too happy to part you from money for aftermarket filters, plug in tuning widgets, power commanders and other such nonsense and will supply 'Evidence' of their efficacy with absurd dyno charts made on dynos calibrated with Shetland ponies. Most of us here have grown out of such nonsense. Map it up right, use stuff that works and ride the piss out of it.

If you want to spend money on stuff spend it where it will do some good, on the suspension and brakes!

Pete

Thanks for the breakdown, Pete. Makes sense. I've been told similar things and nice to have some confirmation. And i have a great suspension shop here in town that i'll have her sent to. Right now the suspension feels a bit like riding a mechanical bull at a dive bar. Looking forward to getting her set-up a little better.

There's a whole thread in Grisology called "what-tyres-for-the-8v" so check that out. Comes down to riding style and personal choice. I went with Pirelli Scopion IIs for longer mileage and toughness. Others prefer more performance tires.

Also lots of threads on suspension. I'm good with the stock components - once I set the sag I found damping settings that work for me (though I'm still toying with the idea of installing a Stelvio shock as others have done).

Want my K&N? I'm following Pete's advice and tossing mine in the garbage.

Anybody who wants a K&N, and I strongly advise against it, is welcome to one of the ones I've removed from customers' bikes and haven't been missed. You pay postage and make a donation to Medicienes sans Frontiers.
