SuperTrapp muffler Empty
PostSubject: SuperTrapp muffler   SuperTrapp muffler Icon_minitime1Tue Aug 01, 2017 4:43 am

Just bought this SuperTrapp S/C Elite muffler to try on the bike. 2.5" inlet is a bit large but will use an adapter pipe to make a good connection to the stock mid-pipe / pretzel. It's 17" long with a 4" outlet.

With that done, it'll be time for re-mapping with one of Beetle's. Question will be, which one? I prefer bottom end and mid-range over top end power since almost all my riding is commuting and 3-6 hour back road rides on the weekends. With the muffler being tune-able I can play with back pressure. Figured I'll start with the stock map and removing discs until it doesn't pop on closed throttle deceleration.

If people keep talking about 'Back Pressure' I'm going to have a fucking aneurism!

How about me also having an aneurism if you still use a common phrase without actually explaining what you think happens in an exhaust pipe and why!

I fart on the head of 'Back Pressure' and pee down the throat of 'Flow Dynamics'!

Arse!

This is why we have assclowns continuing to overfuel and mis-map 8V's in particular but basically all of the late model Guzzis!

No, all I ask is that you explain what you are talking about rather than just parroting blather passed down by word of mouth by knuckle draggers!

The Supertrap *May* be an excellent option, I have no experience of it but the baffling adjustability could be useful. I'm simply saying it won't be the answer to a maiden's prayer and will need a lot of mapping input to perform at its optimum.

Eric
I had one of these on my Buell. I spent years trying to get the number of disks right. The problem was that with 20 disks the sound was deafening! 14 disks was slightly better and 10 disks was OK sound wise but did weird things, huge flat spots in the curve. And even with 10 disks it sounded like a trumpet being run over by a truck. An irritating screeching roar..

NONE of the settings affected performance in a positive way.

I went back to the boat anchor original muffler and was happy with that.

Just sayin

I know nothing about the Superthingy zorsts.

Quote :

I'm going to suggest none of the existing ones.

Every time you change the number of disks, you will need to modify the map to suit. The 8V is very sensitive to changes in exhaust flow. I can make a suggestion for which map might work, but there's no guarantee it will work. I reckon it'll need to be tweaked extensively.

Also, let's hear no more talk of 'back pressure'. Back pressure is a bad thing. we don't want no stinkin' back pressure.

Let me start over...

I got a great deal on this new stainless SuperTrap muffler (15% of retail) and think it will look pretty cool on the GRiSO. The unit is 17.5" long with a 2.5" inlet and 4" outlet. Adding a connector pipe to the stock pretzel will add another 3.5" for 21" (~ 53cm) overall length.

I'll hook it up and play with the number of discs to see if the bike will run halfway decent with the current stock map. Will let y'all know how it runs (or doesn't) after the install. Being realistic, I understand this is an experiment that could work out nicely, or I may have tossed $50 in the toilet. Still cheaper and less costly than going to the dog races.

With all that said, what things should I consider (besides those already offered) as I embark on this muffling adventure?

I appreciate that things need testing, trying, experimenting ect ....otherwise we never learn anything and move forward ....
But, sometimes I just think, why can't we just leave things alone ..............

Yup, and when you install it first thing to do is clear the trims. If you don't yet have Guzzidiag up and running you can do this by pulling the main fuse or disconnecting the battery for a few seconds.

The discs don't work, I had a SupperCrack on my LM3 till the crash. I still have it AND it works real well on my Italian 2 into 1 header. BUT it's shaped different than that 1. Mine is a H-D style cone w/race cap on the back. Makes it a reverse cone meg. Not loud unless on the fuel. Same as on the H-D Stortz kit I think. 1 3/4" in and out. I'll take a pic.

Good luck Eric; although you've only tossed once in the toilet so far and it cost you $50; it sounds like you might be tossing in there some more times to get sorted out. At some point it might be worth going down the dog racing and crack some off there as well Very Happy

Eric
One thing I did was unscrew the bolt that holds the core in the pipe. I then got a kit from SuperTrapp to restuff the muffler with fiberglass. That helped to reduce the harshness of the tone.
I still didn't like it but I didn't like it LESS.

Kit was about $10

Muffler showed up today along with the adapter pipe. The adapter is a tiny bit too small to slip over the stock mid pipe so I'll take the pieces to a muffler shop and get it stretched a little for a good fit.

I was able to get it on enough to see how it fit - doesn't look half bad. Started it up and it's fairly loud with 12 discs but not as bad as the former open pipe the bike came with. It's a brand new unit but I'll check the packing just to be sure it's in good nick.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Once fully fitted and secured I'll see how the bike runs. Will be sure to follow Pete's advice and clear the trims if I change the disc count.

I did a little reading on these mufflers and the consensus is that the open end cap defeats the discs, essentially turning it into an open pipe. Will be keeping the closed cap on mine to manage the noise level...

I have 24 new discs if you need more & end cap, bolts, I couldn't dial carbs to the discs.  It was the same w/muffler that came from IT, it looked like the stock V11LeMans or a car muffler. I have nothing on the inside of mine and open. Yet, I could feel the changes to needle position and jet change, unlike the disc set-up.
12 disc = race cap in back pressure.

This isn't going too well. How do you say 'I told you so' in Aussie? I started with 12 discs and it was way too loud even at idle. I went to 10, then 8 resetting the trim each time. At 8 it's still way too loud so I'll try removing more.

Looks decent though, even with a cobbled installation. Not going to invest in proper clamps and hangers until (if) I can get it running well.

Experiment over. I went to 7, then 6 discs. It still sounded obnoxious and was so corked up the bike barely ran - all blubbery and stinking like gas. I'm going to cut my losses and sell it on eBay to someone who wants to save their life with a loud muffler. pirat

Put the stock back on, reset the trims again and am going for a long ride.... cheers

Love the look of the high pipe but won't work with my panniers. Not sure at this point what aftermarket muffler to consider - want something that sounds close to stock but isn't so massive. Will look through Beetle's inventory and look at the units he's already mapped.
