CARC oil leak Empty
PostSubject: CARC oil leak   CARC oil leak Icon_minitime1Wed Oct 18, 2017 10:14 am

Hello everybody,
carc leak for the second time in 2000km!

First time occured after a rear wheel removal.
I only changed the big oil seal and put 350ml of oil.

Now it happened again. As you can see the leak is major, there's oil all around the rim.

Look like oil has come out of the breather too (too much oil?)

Turning the rear wheel by small increments couldn't fell any "play" meaning explicit bearing fail.

Any ideas?
I freak out in the idea of pulling the carc apart...

Well, actually I am into the concerned frames (not sure about the part number) but it's been 10 years since the recall. I am pretty sure the dealer won't give a shit...

How can I be sure is the bearing? Is there a way to find out?

Looking at the pics I'm suspicious of the front seal and pinion nut but it's virtually impossible to be sure.

You're going to have to take it apart for a confirmation diagnosis.

As a first check get a small screwdriver and see if you can turn the peg nut visible down the throat of the pinion seal holder in relation to the actual pinion shaft.

Hi Pete,
the peg nut turns together with the pinion shaft.
The "throat" is actually pretty clean, no traces of leak in there.

What do you think, should I give it a try with the dealer about the recall thing?

Well, it's the original crappy 17 ball bearing but it hasn't broken up its cage which means you won't see the brinneling of the races until you cut them apart probably. There is also the age factor. As a very early one it's well beyond the ten year timeframe that Guzzi consider reasonable for a recall fix, (And I have to say the logic is hard to fault. It would be like offering warranty on a 1970's Tonti!).

At the end of the day replacing the bearing isn't difficult. The bearing isn't cheap, (I can dig up the number easily enough, make sure it's a good one from Timken or SKF or whoever not one from a country where people use pigs as currency!) and the seal is best replaced by the BMW equivalent as it's cheaper.

Also whoever put the last seal in drove it in too deep. The outer face of the seal should be flush with the casing it pushes in to. It should NOT be pushed in until it uses the outer race of the bearing as a register and that looks like what has been done the last time it was replaced.

Thank Pete, got the point.

Should I replace any other bearings and seals inside the carc?

Nope, probably not. You don't have to remove the front seal holder and disturb that seal to do the big bearing. I think I did a CARC strip for bearing replacement photoessay in the tech bit. Steve copied it from elsewhere I believe.

CARC stripped, main bearing and oil seal changed.
A lot easier job than I thought! Thanks to Pete's guide everything went smoothly.
Now, fingers crossed!
