ASV levers on a GRiSO Empty
PostSubject: ASV levers on a GRiSO   ASV levers on a GRiSO Icon_minitime1Thu Apr 24, 2014 1:27 pm

I had to change out one of my levers (the brake) after a little tumble. It wasn't absolutely essential to change the lever but I decided to anyway. I looked around at several manufacturers and landed on the ASV's. Levers ordered and they arrived the next day. Very nicely presented in their own boxes, each lever laying in its own die cut foam recess. There were also several packets in other recesses which contain bushes and extensions and other paraphernalia to allow fitment to various makes and models of motorcycles. The levers themselves are very nice indeed, I ordered the black with red adjusters and in my opinion they absolutely suit the styling of the Black Devil. Fitting was absolutely straightforward and quite uneventful, everything felt very snug indeed, not necessarily a good thing.

Anyway off I go to work, no big deals parked up and off to earn an honest crust. Out again lunchtime for a quick ride. Get on the machine looking at my lovely new levers, started up, into gear, dropped the clutch, stalled. Oops this is embarrassing. Restarted, into gear and found myself feathering the clutch to get away. (I'm guessing about 70% of you already know whats coming), wtf is going on. I had to stop a few yards up the road to investigate, I already knew what I was going to find, the brakes were binding. After taking some considerable time pumping levers and trying to push the machine around the brakes released and I could get away only to find when I got home that they were binding again.

I measured up the recesses in both the ASV and Guzzi levers and found that the ASV recess was narrower and not as deep as the Guzzi lever also the taper of the recess in ASV was faster than the guzzi. Basically the master cylinder piston was not bottoming in the recess thus not allowing any play at all. Unfortunately after riding a few miles you end up with a brake system that is pressurised but does not allow the fluid to return to the reservoir.

Its a real shame but I am afraid the ASV levers for me anyway are not compatible with the GRiSO. I think you may be able to make them so if you know someone in a machine shop, but be warned there is minimal meat available around the recess to work with.

Is the plunger not adjustable? With the stock lever there is a barrel with the threaded plunger screwed into it. The depth of the plunger can be adjusted by undoing the eeny-weeny hex key grub screw in the underside of the barrel and then turning the plunger in and out to get the correct free play.

I use cheap knock-offs. They are surprisingly well made and work well with my GRiSO. And cheap. As in one pair costs about 10% of one ASV lever.  Very Happy

El-Cheapo Levers

Is this under the rubber boot on the master cylinder Pete? All there is on the brake lever is a recess. See photos below, top guzzi version, next ASV followed by master cylinder push rod. I hope you are right Pete.

I've had the Pazzo (crazy) Racing levers for several years now. Sometimes Canadians do Italian very well!

Very nice levers, folding and non folding. Here's a link for a UK distributor. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
