PostSubject: Fork removal   Fork removal Icon_minitime1Fri Mar 25, 2016 8:43 am

Its about 6,500 miles on the clock so I am going to remove the forks and have the oil changed. I will
forgo replacing the seals the manual calls for as they are not leaking.
Here is the question: I have a roll on chock for the front wheel and the Moto Guzzi shop lifter plus a floor jack. This setup works fine for getting wheels off,
Will I have enough clearance to remove the forks? Or do I need to hang the bike from the rafters? Figured someone has done this,
and its always good to stand on your experience.

Really don't want to do the hang from the rafters thing...

Use the Guzzi shop lifter with floor jack and timber under sump. Lift front with jack and remove wheel. Remove guard and forks.

Does the back wheel need to come off to get the front high enough?

No. If you take the weight with jack so front wheel is just off floor(it will just spin) you will have enough room. To reassure yourself measure the distance from bottom of lower fork yoke to top of fork. Then measure distance from bottom of fork to floor.

Sounds good! Will do, then when I put the forks back I can raise em up a bit for snappier steering, heh heh...

I have done front forks & seals - done at 19k miles (not even oil before then) and even then just because I felt guilty rather than any problem. I sent it to Brooks suspension in Bradford Uk and had the valves etc revamped at same time. I would suggest doing steering bearings at same time as it is a breeze with forks removed. Jack up the whole bike with wood block under sump works fine. I think basic steering already really good so wouldn't shorten the standard set up.

I bought a little tool to help take the pre load assembly off, check out the workshop manual you'll understand.
So you can take the spring and spacer out.
I gave my forks a wash out and replaced with 5 weight maxima oil last week and what a difference it made.
Seems not so harsh.

Not brave enough for that yet. Got my forks set up by Dave Moss Tuning and they work great!

Triman why would you go through the bother and expense to do your fork oil at only 6500 miles??? Personally I would wait until at least 30,000 miles or a fork seal started to leak. If you're doing a fork upgrade then have at er. My personal experience is if you're going to pull forks apart always always change the seals as well false economy not to in my opinion .

It won't help for warranty when you don the work yourself. Only a official guzzi workshop will do. If you are not doing very starnge things, nothing wrong with oil after 10000. I got my stelvio forks serviced first at 40000 km, and oil came out like new.

No doubt true in Europe, Paul, but in the U.S. not necessarily so as a result of the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act.  See, e.g.,

Thanks for the input! I am reevaluating my plan. I think I will wait and put some more miles on these forks first. They are working just fine right now. My warranty is up in August anyway.
