Subject: Fork pinch bolts. Fri Jan 29, 2021 10:04 am
Hi guys. I'd like to pick the collective brains for a minute. While sitting in the garage staring at my GRiSO, I noticed the 4 pinch bolts clamping the front axle were regular old 10mm bolts. And they're looking like crap. All the other bolts on the forks are allen head stainless steel bolts. Already figured out they are M8×1.25×40. The they are only threaded for the first 20mm of the bolt then the rest is just standard shank.
Would it be wrong to use bolts (allen head/stainless) that are threaded over the entire 40mm length instead of the shanked ones? What sayeth the flock?
Do it, the originals are made from mouldy cheese, so not a lot to live up to.
The difference between set screws and bolts is only the thread - unless it needs to be super tight, should be OK. I have done many bolts on mine with SS.
And remember they don't have to be cranked up "Til you fart', just nipping them up is all they need. Standard 8mm steel into alloy is 22 ft/lbs but in a situation like this you really don't have to go that tight. Chances of cracking the casting on a GRiSO are low. Early Stelvios were a nightmare!
22 ft/lbs is 29Nm. The SM says 25Nm, but since I had to run a tap through one of mine, I now use 20Nm (15 ft/lbs).

Quick update.
My local Ace Hardware had the bolts and washers to go with them in stock. No challenge or feat of engineering, but I feel it looks better. Its the small victories.
