8v not Returning to idle Empty
PostSubject: 8v not Returning to idle   8v not Returning to idle Icon_minitime1Sun Jul 20, 2014 8:10 am

The symptom: riding around and when coming to a stop i start to down shift normally and when I get to the stop with the clutch pulled in the engine stays at 3,000 to 3,500rpm.  I can put it in neutral (I am usually in first at this point) blip the throttle and it will come back down to 3,000 to 3,500 but no lower. I can slip the clutch while holding the brake for just a second and the engine speed will come down but as soon as the clutch is pulled in or it is in neutral back to 3,000 it goes.

The only way to get it to come back to idleing normally is to kill the engine with the key and re-start.  it will behave as it should for a while till this happens again.  usually about once or twice in 200 miles.

This condition has been present since mile 0 and has gotten no better or worse.
so far:
this throws no error code
cables are fine and adjusted correctly (the butterfly is on the stop when this happens I checked)
no intake leaks
behavior has never changed with any map or software revision

I let this go during the break in period as a break in glitch but it has persisted

The bad part is that this is very intermittent

Just asking but you have done a TB balance and TPS re-set? Only one air bleed open? Is the charcoal canister still installed?

If the answer to these is 'Yes' my next step would be to try physically clamping off the stepper feed nice the engine is warm and seeing if that cures it. I've heard of a couple of bikes that have high idle issues but have never actually had one that I've had a chance to fix. The last customer I had had a little tanty because I couldn't fix it miraculously on the spot by sacrificing a chicken on the tank and never came back to allow me to do any real diagnostic work. That was a Norge, 2O2 sensor motor. He *Fixed* it by disabling the stepper by installing a tap in the line which I would of considered a kludge but he thinks is an acceptable solution. I personally doubt it is stepper related but if you'd like to swap yours out I have a spare you're welcome to borrow.

The charcoal canister is still on this one, only the left bleed open and the sync is spot on.

Was wondering about the stepper but was not sure if it was always active or just during the warm up on this bike...will try clamping the feed.

The bugger of this one is it only shows up when the engine is hot after 50-75 miles or maybe 100miles of continuous running. After the re-start it may not happen again or it may happen a few times within 20 miles or so.

Have you had a bad TPS sensor? was wondering what the symptoms were if you have had one.

Never had a bad TPS. Doesn't mean it can't happen of course Very Happy.

You should try the ScanM5x app to see what the TPS/injection values are when this happens.

Another thing to try: If you suspect your TPS, use the graphing tool in GuzziDiag to check for any noise in the TPS curve.

I'll be back in Bungendore in about ten days. If you can wait that long I can flick my spare off to you.

that will be fine, I'll pm an address, and can cover the cost on what ever way is good for you...no steppers in NA parts. big surprise. Glad of this actually as the tps is not avail any where and is like $585 I think it is the same a a part on the older buells, which means one may be had if needed

For what it's worth, my local shop said they reset the TPS, but I used Ducatidiag to do to myself and the idle instantly went down to normal.  I've also removed the cannister, but that came later for good measure.

been done many times at every map iteration, this one has some other failed component or wiring harness fault right now I am load testing every conductor in the wiring harness

Did the replacement stepper cure the problem?

Not 100% sure yet it seems to have but I have a failing crank sensor (it works fine to a given temp then it starts being flaky) and an injector that has gone south so I am not 100% sure that the idle issue is fixed.
