Indeed, glad it's all over. Took it out again for just that last confirmation
On the off chance that someone has the same symptoms as me and finds this thread (since it doesn't seem to happen often) here's the "ideal" order for troubleshooting:
1. test/swap ignition relay [replace relay if swapping fixes it]
2. verify 12v is getting to the coil side of the relay [check ignition circuit if it is not]
3. verify 12v. is getting to pin 1 of the ECU [if not, replace pink/brown wire to ECU]
4. test the continuity to negative battery on the back of the ECU body [if it's poor/open loop either clean up the ground strap on the ECU or add a supplemental ground wire to the negative terminal from the same bolt]
5.ECU replacement
