Subject: Engine stopped at traffic lights.... Tue Dec 10, 2024 7:12 am
Hi, I'm curious to hear if others encountered this problem, I have a 2006 1100 (40k) the starter button was dead, after about 5 minutes it became alive and it started. I'm wondering, if this issue is intermittent could it be the battery?

So are you saying the engine died suddenly and wouldn’t restart? Or did the bike stall for some reason, (Knocked into gear by mistake?) and then wouldn’t start on the button?

Wouldn’t know, could be. Did you check if the charging of the battery when the engine runs is all ok? If the voltage regulator is malfunctioning strange things can happen. Or the battery itself. Or a short in the circuit. Or something else. Hope somebody smarter than me with some actual knowledge on GRiSO’s can be of more service.

I was stationary and the bike just stopped running, it wasn't overheated or anything and was dead on the starter button, until about 5 minutes and then she fired up.

Did the dash go blank? Idiot lights cease to function?

In which case it is almost certainly an earth or battery contact issue. First thing to do is take the positive and negative leads off the battery and give them a really good clean and scrub with a wire brush and, if needed wet ‘n dry. Get them gleaming. Repeat with the battery posts and then reattach the leads after smearing the posts and lead ends with Vaseline or terminal protectant.
Now remove the starter motor cover. Underneath the top cover bolt you will see two cables with eyelets on bolted to the gearbox by a hexagonal *thingy* that the top cover bolt screws in to. Remove the *Thingy*, (It’s a 13mm hex.) and repeat the cleaning procedure you did on the battery leads and posts on the ends of the two cables and give the paint around the hole the *Thingy* screws into a pot of a polish for good measure.
Reinstall the cables with the *Thingy* once again using some Vaseline on it. Do NOT overtighten it! It’s only a 5mm thread and will snap off if you are ham fisted.
Reinstall the starter motor cover and turn the ignition on. You’ll have to re-set the clock etc.
If the problem recurs we’ll have to dig deeper but it sounds like a classic case of corrosion and heat induced contact drop out to me.

Thank you, Pete, it sounds like the culprit! I'm off down your way in a day so I won't have time to clean the term"s, first thing I do when I'm back.

Indeed, doing a previously suggested, clean and tighten all connections. Also, pay attention as you work, to see if any seem particularly loose. If so, that one's like the issue.
Years ago, wife and I rode the Beartooth Highway in Montana. After refueling in a little town, her bike wouldn't start. Long story short, it was a loose battery connection. We'd just gone from low 50's/f to over 100*f in a short time. Thermal change can do strange things.
