Wrong oil filter

I changed the oil in my 2015 GRiSO yesterday. I had a filter I got from my dealer last year. After I had dropped the oil and removed the old oil filter I see the dealer accidentally gave me the filter for pre-2015 bikes. It is about an inch or so longer than the right filter. I put it on and it fit with no leaks (I was desperate to ride as we finally had a 60 degree day in Central New York).

Other than the possible catastrophic failure if a rock hits and pierces the protruding filter, oil covers my rear tire and I crash while the motor grenades from a lack of oil, will any other bad things happen?

I had 2 filters left from my 13 and I just used the last one on the 17 in the fall. I haven't had any problems with them, other than sitting a tad lower from the pan. I'm also running that Silkolene 10w-60 "red" oil that was going for 20 bucks a gallon a couple years ago from the Stone Pony and that oil has been working just fine. That was a Good Deal, bought 4 of those as well.

No, the filter will work fine, as you say the only issue is the risk of damage from road detritus. Flow rate is in fact higher but crack pressure for the bypass is identical.

Road Detritus concerns can largely be addressed by wrapping a 3" steel clamp around the low hanging fruit.

This from Wix re; the 51438 and a replacement Wix for late model GRiSO;

"51348 is a 21 micron filter.
57035 is shorter at 32 micron , used on Briggs and Stratton engines and Kawasaki Small engines.

Does this also mean I can use the shorter oil filters in a 2009 bike? I accidentally bought 2 from MG Cycle.

Yup, as long as they have the correct seat and spigot size they will be just fine. The only thing likely to be different in any filter as long as it fits is the crack pressure at which it is designed to go into bypass if it gets loaded, (Blocked with muck.) or if the oil is so thick, (In very cold weather/wrong oil.) so it can't pass through the filter medium fast enough.

Neither of these scenarios is likely and in fact I've only ever once seen a Guzzi filter that has gone into bypass. That was on an 850T with an oil filter that the owner didn't know was there. The bike had done nearly 200,000Km and still had the original filter in it! When I cut it open? Yes, it was in bypass!

All a larger filter does is take longer to load up. It doesn't filter any better or worse than a small one.

The shorter UFI for earlier Guzzi's are a different spigot thread. You'd have to change the fitting.

Short ones for Cali1400 fit fine though Steve. Same as used on post '15 Grisos.

I use whatever I've got hanging about on the Mana, long UFI fits fine, looks a bit odd but works fine. I can use any of the fat spigot filters on any of my bikes.
