So what is the best tool for the job? The Morgan Carbtune or the Carbmate?
On paper it appears like the electronic Carbmate looks better but I can see it probably
has some limitations. The Morgan looks good but is it as accurate as the electronic box?

OK now to make some popcorn....

Tubes and mercury or even oil will always be perfectly balanced, gravity and atmospheric pressure is always a constant. Electronic gadgets, or even analogue gauges can be easily disrupted from a bump, or moisture ingress, vibrations etc.

What? Eleventy-eleven cheers smileys didn't convince you?

To be brutally honest, I have no valid reason other than my own opinion. I have no experience with the carbmate, but I've never been enamored with low-end electronic balancing tools. They don't seem to have a very good sensitivity adjustment. Pete has some big fancy electrickery one that works extremely well, but it's very expensive.

I like the simplicity of an analogue balancing tool, and the carbtune can't leak, and I've had one for more than 20 years and it's has never let me down.

Oh, and resolution. A scale on a gauge beats an LED on/off any day.

Carbmate is a good tool. Can't even remember what my thing is called offhand but it is very accurate and has a useful dynamic readout that can be helpful in diagnosis. Tube manometers do work well too but if they get used as much as I use mine they are a messy pain in the arse!

Agree on the smiles, I do like to see actual things sliding up and down tubes...

Mine too! An alternative is of course to make your own sync "tool" using some plastic hose partly filled with water or oil. There are plenty of How too's on the net,

Used to have a CarbtuneII, it became inaccurate (readings not repeatable compared to electric) through lack of use.
Carbmate big brother the VacuumMate ( the $800Au 4 channel jobbie) used by another tech on the Guzzi. He liked it, evidently recommended by BMW for late bikes. Pretty lights, even in bright daylight.

In a rush, after resetting the sacred screw and TPS, made a manometer using the time honoured plastic tubing and 2-stroke oil, with simple irrigation damper valves, bit of wood, etc.
Rubber tubing and adapter nipples from CarbTuneII, the main body was kaput and binned.

Successfully balanced my 1100 and another blokes 1200. Best $10 and 1 hour of my life spent tuning.
Sits in corner of shed and amuses me when barometric pressure changes.

Good luck with your choice.
