6k Mile Service at Dealer Empty
PostSubject: 6k Mile Service at Dealer   6k Mile Service at Dealer Icon_minitime1Tue Jun 02, 2015 12:02 pm

This Saturday I'll go for the 6k mile service and I'm wondering if it's recommended to reload the awful stock map so the dealer doesn't put my GRiSO on some blacklist that might cause them to refuse to help with the expense if my flat tappets go bad later? Are they even likely to notice that I have a different map?

Unless they download the map and open it up in Tunerpro or the like and do a direct comparison there is no way for them to tell, apart from the fact that it runs about a zillion times better!

Highly unlikely they would have the skills, knowledge or equipment to do that and why would they?

Just make sure they set the valves to 6 & 8 and know not to screw about with the linkage rod and throttle stop screw when doing the TB balance and it should be golden.

Thanks fellas. I'll leave it as is.

In case others in LA are curious, I called all four dealers in the LA area and the one in Escondido. Only 1 of the 5 could tell me what they charge for the service without putting me on hold for 10 minutes or saying something absurd. I'll be taking it to Pro Italia in Glendale, as previously recommended by Dungeonmaster.  Pro Italia is also a big Ducati dealer, but at least they are not primarily a Vespa shop, as seems to be the case with most of the others. Vespas are very popular here and Guzzi has been tacked on as an afterthought to the Vespa dealerships.
One of these lot quoted me $800 for the service!  affraid When I asked for specifics, he said they'd replace the fork seals as part of the service. So I asked why would you replace fork seals that aren't leaking? He replied, well, err... it's just a good idea.  clown  pirat Next!! Pro Italia charges $450 and seems to know which end is up. We shall see...

Re-sealing the forks is suggested at the first service. I have no idea why. One has to wonder if Guzzi ask Showa to add a handful of sand to each set made for them specifically on assembly because no other manufacturer seems to deem it necessary!

Really though the best bet is to take the bike to a suspension specialist and get them to set the forks up for you. That will involve re-sealing anyway. A much better option than just re-sealing them because the book sez so!

I'm happy to report that my GRiSO had the 6k service today at Pro Italia and it's running sweeter than ever. In and out same day and all is well.
I was a little worried upon arrival as there were dozens of bikes lined up all around the building, mostly Ducatis, apparently waiting for service or pickup. It's a relatively small garage, but they do BIG volume. They all seem sharp and friendly. No shaved apes as far as I could tell.
I asked if they are seeing flat tappet failures and he replied they have seen a few, but only on high mileage bikes. So I'm feeling better about that situation. Seems to support the idea that the failures are mostly a cold climate problem.

Thanks Pete for the suggestion about going to a suspension specialist. I'm putting that on my to-do list. Now to look for a good one...
